ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Out of Nowhere, Jan Knutson's exciting debut album produced by world-famous guitarist and educator Frank Vignola.

Jan's beautiful playing and musical ideas speak for themselves, but in the words of world-renowned guitarist Martin Taylor, "Jan is an extraordinary talent. He doesn't just play music, he IS music!"

Inspired by the artistry of Art Tatum, Joe Pass, Erroll Garner, Barney Kessel, Martin Taylor and Frank Vignola, 15-year-old Jan Knutson has crafted an album of improvised, entirely solo jazz guitar. Here he presents his take on the music of some of the greatest jazz composers, from Gershwin and Porter to Parker and Coltrane , and seeks to honor the extraordinary solo legacy of the world’s foremost jazz guitarists. The music here was recorded in studio without edits, the goal being to capture the experience of an intimate, organic jazz performance.

The guitar used on this recording is a 17 inch archtop guitar built by his father.

A Remarkable Debut Album!
Jan Knutson is quickly establishing himself as one of today’s outstanding young guitarists, doubtless one of the few who is able to continue and indeed build on the great solo playing established by legends such as Joe Pass and Lenny Breau. We will certainly be hearing lots more from him, and let’s hope his next CDs follow quickly. It is no wonder why Mr. Frank Vignola—himself one of the most world’s most renowned jazz artists—served as producer for the project. The sound quality is superb, and the instrument, built by Jan’s father, Jeff Knutson, has an incredibly warm tone (check out the pics online or in the CD booklet!). Another thing that makes this recording special is that no editing was done, capturing the indispensable live element of improvisation that all too often gets lost in the studio process. This is a disc I highly recommend to all jazz fans. Warning: many of you guitarists might decide to call it quits after listening! Or you might be inspired to practice a whole lot more—as I was.
