A rare musical treat!
The first 40 seconds of track 1 “Infinity” has an intriguing, warm glow, and is a perfect opening for this CD. It is like walking through the intentionally subdued tunnel entrance of a great architectural masterpiece, like Frank Lloyd Wright’s Unity Temple, opening into a great dramatic moving space, or more like the Sistine Chapel, as this collection of unique songs is very much like that masterpiece, full of highly detailed images of a richly colored life and mythology.
I gave this CD a not-quite scientific test, I secretly put it in the CD changer in my wife’s car, she soon grabed me and said “who is that? It’s just great!” I had to get another copy as she wouldn’t give it back to me.
The musical styling here is diverse and very tasty, from the lush intimate string beauty of ‘Don’t Ask Me How I Know’ to the darker, haunting “Everything Will Follow” and the infectious uplifting “Green Lights” and the rousing sing along closer “All in this Together”. You will have these melodies stuck in your head, but that’s a very good thing. The instrumental arrangements are extremely well crafted and match Jason’s great vocals perfectly.
Lyrically, it is rich and varied, with great imagery, and a cosmic sensibility runs throughout. Here is a bit of “Green Lights”, which although lighter fare than some of the songs here, you will see Jason is very skillfull wordsmith:
“I have been blessed with luminescence by the evening sun
And I am washed in holy water when the warm rains come
I smell the roses, when there are no rose to smell
I feel like lightening in the morning on a wishing well
I climbed the trails of confusion over hills of shame
Among the sinners I’ve walked, then I took the blame
I came with nothing and I multiplied it many times
There’s a kingdom in the way you look at me sometimes

The Joy of OK is one of those rare musical treats, real, meaningful songs by a real person, not corporate musical poser, wannabe or pop impersonator. It’s the kind of CD that just gets better and better every time you listen to it.
