Album Notes
Rings Around The Sun is a compilation of Jay Gordon's finest work. This CD demonstrates his explosive and tasteful artistry as a premier rock-blues guitarist. His musicianship along with his soulful vocals place him in a class by himself.

Strat-slinger Jay Gordon's self-produced CD is strictly for lovers of in-your-face guitar playing, something he is really good at. its more a wall of sound approach than one with varied dynamics, and the Hendrix/SRV licks around on all 17 cuts. - (blue access)

Whoo-ee baby, grab the fire extinguishers. rings around the sun (blue ace 30005) a compilation by LA player Jay Gordon is loaded with fret-melting shred-blues guitar work. Mustang Sally is brutal. Rings Around The Sun is designed to blow your ears flat against your head.

A greatest hits collection with bonus and "hidden" tracks, this is packed with furious blues-rock and the kind of amped-up guitar solos that can leave audiences limp from pleasure.

Jay Gordon is a master of the genre. - (rock city news.)

Real Blues Magazine/ A. Grigg

Jay Gordon He's a Mean Guitar Slinger/ Rings Around the Sun Deserves World Wide
Critically Acclaimed Rock Blues Guitarist Jay Gordon's "Rings Around the Sun"- Awarded Top Blues/Rock CD of year 2000. 7th Annual Canadian Real Blues Awards. Real Blues Magazine Number 25 July 2001. Jay Gordon is an unusual artist with a fascinating background and a totally unique approach to blues guitar playing. Definitely not a CD for blues "purists" (or others allergic to drinkin'& dancin') "Rings" is a compilation of tunes Jays recorded from 1990 to 98 and released on various Blue Ace CDs. Jay Gordon has had the luck and privilege of being mentored and advised by some of the greatest bluesmen in Chicago and Los Angeles first with the great Eddie Taylor & Blue Blood McMahon in Chi Town as a teenager (McMahon & Jay played a gig together when Jay was just 17) Later in the 1980s with JJ BadBoy Jones & Phillip Walker. Walker, one of the greatest Texas/West Coast blues guitarists alive, Jay Gordon would form very close ties culminating in the recording of the "JayWalkin" CD (Blue Ace) with Walker & Jay Gordon sharing the spotlight. What is surprising is the while Jay Gordon was associated with some very influential and legendary bluesmen over the years (Albert Collins) Jay Gordon chose to go his own route style wise when it would be natural for just about any young blues picker to attempt to emulate the sounds of the older veterans. So, while Jay soaked up the advice of Albert Collins, Phillip Walker & Eddie Taylor (what a power trio,eh'-) and watched their fingers attentively be sought to develope his own sound which incorporated the whole spectrum of Blues/Rock what Jay Gordon came up with was an attack that is as High-Energy and High Octane as it gets-very reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix in his most aggressive work. Not for sissies as they say, the Blues of Jay Gordon is macho macho and In-Yo' Face (and in Yo' Ears) the whole Spirit of Rock 'N Roll is evoked from Start to Finish. Take no prisoners is the approach here if you love testosterone-fueled blues guitar like the stuff being put out by Don Griffin (U.S.) or Wailin' Al Walker (Canada) You'll Definitely Like This Stuff. Jay Gordon sings, plays regular and slide guitar, blows harp & wrote all 17 tracks, I must say that if there was ever a CD perfect for air guitar olympics "Rings" Is It. "Message to Collins", a Killer Instrumental, shows Jay Gordon in Top For--m as does "Drivin' Force" & "Voodoo Boogie" is the Toughest, Meanest Electric Slide You'll Ever Hear. Jay Gordon is a monster when it comes to High Energy Blues Rock Guitar and "Rings Around the Sun" will probably astound those who haven't Jay Gordon work prior. For all Heavy Blues Guitar freaks out there, this is Definitely One CD to put at the very top of your "Want List" Jay Gordon is an artist to watch/listen for. He's a Mean Guitar-Slinger that's for sure and there are very few competitors in this genre that'd hold their own against Jay Gordon. Smoldering Disc that Deserve World Wide Attention.

A masterwork
I have never heard such a style of music since Jimi himself died. The album is just a rollercoaster of sonic force and masterful use of guitar. It is next on my "absolutely have to have" list of CDs.

Jay Gordon's lightning-fast licks and soulful voice
Label: Blue Ace - Born in Charlotte, raised in Chicago and now based in Los Angeles, guitarist Jay Gordon received his blues injection back in the Windy City, where he was inspired by the likes of Buddy Guy, Junior Wells and close personal friend Albert Collins. Rings Around the Sun is a compilation of tracks from Jay's four Blue Ace albums. Jay's lightning-fast licks and soulful voice dominate this mostly electric, hard-rockin, blues-based disc. Jay's inspiration comes from the likes of John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix, and their influences and spirit can be heard throughout Rings Around the Sun. Album Network/Matthew Lawton

Jay Gordon Blows your ears flat against your head with stratocaster in hand.
Jay Gordon stands out. In fact, the Los Angeles guitarist stands out, screams from the edge of a cliff, cranks the amps until the knobs come off, squashes effects pedals beneath his feet and plays insanely fast and hard before leaping, stratocaster in hand, into a flaming, boiling sea of Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Winter-inspired licks. Jay does not always bang his head so hard, as one of his previous releases was recorded alongside Phillip Walker, and as a youngster he managed to cool out with Chicago and L.A. players including Lefty Dizz, J.J.Bad Boy Jones, Albert Collins & other blues legends. But Rings Around the Sun, a sort of greatest hits collection with several tunes culled from previous releases, is pretty much designed to blow your ears flat against your head. Jay Gordon spends so much of the 76 action-packed minutes jamming that he's got very little time to explain Eastern philosophy, thus succinct title to track seven: Karma (Gonna get Ya). In the liner notes, Jay say's he's learned from the likes of Walker to back off and let the music breathe, but it's very hard to hear that he's learned anything other than to pour gasoline on a fire. Jay Gordon is one of the strongest new voices of the blues. EXPLOSIVE!!!
During the past decade, Jay Gordon has emerged as one of the most explosive guitarists in blues. Although one thinks of such predecessors as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy when hearing his lengthy and passionate solos, Jay Gordon actually has his own sound within rock & blues. Rings Around the Sun is mostly a "best of" collection that draws its material from Jay Gordon's previous Blue Ace recordings plus four brand new tracks. This Cd is quite fiery highlights include Message to Collins,Drippin Blues,Voodoo Boogie & Blues Infested. Recommended to Rock & Blues fans. All Music Guide/Scott Yanow
