ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Singer-songwriter-actor Jean Brassard has been enjoying a multi-faceted career on stage, film and television for decades. Winner of a Bistro and Aggie Award for his MAC-nominated tribute "The Kid From Paris - Jean Brassard Sings Montand" this Quebec City native, New Yorker since the 1980s, introduces his new album - ten of his own compositions - reflecting the bilingual and bi-cultural space where Jean's mind lives (French and English) and its sole concern with love and human relationships.

All at once tender, humorous and dramatic, each composition arranged by Richard Maheux, DIX's musical influences reach as far back as the France of the 1930s and the American jazz and blues of the same period. Boris Vian and Jacques Prévert; Yves Montand; George Moustaki; Serge Regianni; Léo Ferré; Barbara (the French one); Cole Porter, the Gerschwins, Irving Berlin, Cat Stevens; Neil Young; Joni Mitchell; the group Oregon; Quebec singers of the ‘80s, such as Robert Charlevoix, Les Séguins; Harmonium and many more are all parts of its makeup.

Thie listener is brought into an enchanting world where jazz, blues, bebop and la chanson française all swing together as Jean's melodious tones invite us to meditate on love: the one we want and look for, the one we refuse or is refused to us, and when we are blessed, the one we share.

Most of the basic trio tracks were recorded with Philip Weinrobe at Figure 8 studios in Brooklyn, with Richard on the keys, Dan Loomis on bass and Spencer Cohen on drums. Other musicians came along at Richard's Brooklyn Vibes Studio, they are: Igor Lumpert on sax, Dave Scott on trumpet, Jay Rattman on soprano sax and clarinet. Blanca Cecilia Gonzalez and Pauline Kim Harris played violins for us. Vinny Raniolo and Tom Chang did the same on guitar. Chris Yeager from Switzerland hit the drums on a couple of tunes while he was in New York City. Richard's talents are also featured on guitar and accordion. Brassard himself added highlights of harmonica and flute.

A couple of years back, Dave Krueger came to Brassard with a folder of the artist's poems, some dating to his teenage years and said: how about publishing these? Without that gesture from Jean's love, muse and love of his life, there would be no album.

Of DIX, Brassard says: For me DIX is like a kite with a long tail floating around in the breeze on a sunny day. I hope you'll enjoy discovering it as much as we've enjoyed hoisting it into the wind. And that you'll find yourself humming or swinging to a new tune on the street and wonder, “What is this song? And go, ah yes, it's Jean's song!
