Album Notes
“Welcome to Canada” was written by Marie-Lynn Hammond & Jeanette Arsenault as part of the series, “This Is My Canada Presents” in support of Canadians welcoming Syrian refugee families into their community. The song was produced, arranged and recorded by Tom Leighton.

It was launched at the Islamic Society of Belleville (Ontario, Canada) January, 2017. 100% of ALL monies raised for each download and streaming of this song will be donated to the Refugee Sponsorship Group in Belleville, ON.

Hammond is a well-known, well-loved iconic Canadian Folk Singer/Songwriter & former CBC Radio broadcaster who was also a founding member of the iconic band, “Stringband”. She is currently performing her original songs as well as writing and editing books.

Arsenault is a Canadian singer/songwriter who wrote/produced/hosted “This Is My Canada Presents” based on her anthemic song, “This Is My Canada”. Her goal is to feature other Canadian music artists and she is currently working on a project to launch her song nationally along with a brand new video.

Leighton is a multi-instrumentalist, indefatigable musician who brings sophisticated colours and novel arrangements to his music that few musicians can match. He plays piano, accordion, accordion bass, bouzouki, bodhran, whistles, jaw harps, mandolin and trombone— sometimes three of them at the same time!

She’s only eight years old, all she’s known is war
She doesn’t understand what they’re fighting for
At least there’s no more shooting, no bombing in the camp
But hunger haunts her belly and the tent is cold and damp

He’s just turned seventeen and is wise beyond his years
Holding his sister’s hand he’s learned to hide his fears
And now they’re on a plane at last hoping to outrun the past
The western sky is all alight as they step down from their flight
(They hear):

Welcome to Canada, bienvenue au Canada
A land of second chances and a place to start anew
Welcome to Canada, bienvenue au Canada
Our home & native land is now your country, too

Everything is strange to her in this foreign town
She stares out in wonder as the snowflakes tumble down
But her heart is aching for her mother’s tender touch
And her father’s gentle laughter, she misses them so much
Last night he dreamed again his parents had not died
Still living in Damascus, they were walking by his side
But it’s just him and his sister now, he knows they’ll find a way somehow
Here they’ll make a brand new start, greeted by loving hearts
(Who say):
And when their pain has faded
And their tears have washed away
There may come a time when
They will be the ones to say
