About Tonescapes:
Music can evoke powerful images. Musicians have understood this capability since the beginning of time. Even tribal dances and its music depicts pictures and tells stories for its audience. This CD honors the magical spell that music casts upon us. The title of each work provides insight to the subject matter, and the music fills in the spaces.
This album includes solo and ensemble music for all the flutes in the flute family. Baikal Journey (premiere recording) by Catherine McMichael, is a fantastic work for solo bass flute, alto flute, e-flat flute and C flute. The entire work is a tribute to Lake Baikal, the world's largest and most endangered body of fresh water that it is unfamiliar to most people beyond Russia's borders. Catherine borrows Russia's common names for this lake for the titles and uses folk tunes as well as original music to portray this incredible place. Throughout our correspondence, she kept sending me amazing facts about this lake. It is apparent through her music, that Lake Baikal is a magical and mysterious place for her. The final movement calls for the E flat flute, an instrument rarely written for that offers a woody, rustic sound quality that well suits the character.

Love the sound of the flute? You'll this work.
I've just finished listening to this recording for the third time. This is a CD that will lift your spirits and refresh your soul. It's music that will alternately make you want to get up and dance, dream, sing, meditate, and gaze contemplatively out your window. Rebecca's solo work will captivate you from the first mystical bars on Steve Tung's compostion 'Alone in the Rain' to the vibrant joyous strains of the Girl From Ipanema in 'Pot-Pourri Brasiliero'. The album also includes several quartet pieces where Rebecca is joined by flutists Kara Ebert, Karen Edwards, and Lisa Sheldone, and a duet with Rebecca and Kara. The quartet sound is rich and cohesive, displaying the full palette of the flute family in Mel Lauf's evocative 'Orientale'. The music on the album is an eclectic mix of beautiful tonal compositions, many of which are recent publications. The selections share the common thread of suggesting beautiful imagery. For those of you familiar with recent flute ensemble literature, the album includes two marvelous works by Catherine McMichael, the quartet "Acadamie of Dance" for piccolo, flute, alto, and bass, and "Lake Baikal", a new composition for solo flute and piano. The latter is in four movements featuring bass, alto, c flute, and Eb flute successively.

A truly amazing and inspiring recording
I am very excited about this CD. The opening alto flute piece, "Alone In The Rain" by Tung, sets the mood, providing beautiful mental images of a walk in the park in a light rain. Each subsequent piece conjures more visualizations from rice paddies ("Orientale" by Lauf) to dances ("Pot-Pourri Brasileiro" by Arantes, and "Academie of Dance" by McMichael) to an endangered Russian lake ("Baikal Journey" by McMichael).

Not only are the musical selections wonderful choices, the performance of the beautiful music is incredibly inspiring. The impeccable intonation, lush blend, and excellent balance among the players make this a very rare find, indeed.

Whether flute and piano, multiple flutes, or a variety of flutes of different sizes, the ability of Rebecca Jeffreys and her colleagues to express the music in such a way as to be able to provide the gorgeous imagery is truly a terrific gift.

The title, "Tonescapes" is definitely appropriate for this CD. You must listen to and "watch" this beautiful CD.

A must have for all fluties
If you love flute music than this is a must have CD. Rebecca's playing is right up there with those I call Masters of the Flute. I feel fortunate that all my CD players take just one disc because it is alright with me that this CD just keeps on repeating.

"...Tonescapes calls up times and places far away..."
"Driving up to the New Hampshire border to visit Rebecca Jeffreys is almost as much pleasure as meeting the talented flutist herself. That's especially true when soft snow is falling en route to her home in Pepperell, and her new solo CD for flute and piano is playing.Worries about spiraling gas prices, tax bills and the war on terrorism vanish, at least temporarily, in a cascade of music. Rolling down tree-shadowed highways at dusk, the album Tonescapes calls up times and places far away. That's exactly what the artists's debut distribution Cd is meant to do." "Jeffreys' performance is as clear and limpid as a mountain lake
"Jeffreys' performance is as clear and limpid as a mountain lake and her work on alto flute is especially moving. She is a fine flutist with great intonation, musical phrasing, and expression – and a legato to die for."
