Album Notes
Jens Wernick is a singer-songwriter, a poet, a storyteller based in Munich, Germany. “Camerado” is Jens´ debut CD. It not only is a collection of great, handcrafted songs, a well balanced blend of different styles and genres, but a homage to this crazy trip we call life, a short story about friendship and love.
If a musician such - as Jens - releases his first CD at the early age of 52, inevitably one is tempted to ask: What does the artist expect? What does he wish to accomplish? Who does he think he will be able to address? Does he still believe in a carreer? But some artists only at the age of 52 are prepared to write music, to tell stories or to paint pictures in a way that it may be presented to the world.
Led into law studies and a career as a lawyer by his life, Jens as well always lived out the other side, the artistic side of his character. Already as a high school student he played in different bands and took part in studio projects. From 1995 on he participated in the International Songwriters Evening, at present the oldest Open Mic Event in Munich – at first as an attendee, then as a member of the team of organizers. In this way he was able to introduce his songs to an audience and exchange with his fellow musicians. This not only increased his creativity significantly, but also led to contacts with almost all the “friends” who participated in the recordings of “Camerado”. Besides, all through the years a big number of songs came into being.
Cooperation with other Munich singer-songwriters was following, leading to songs being published on various CD´s of his musician friends. At some point Jens simply had to release his own CD.
It was a happy coincidence, that in the fall of 2012 Jens met again with Wolfgang Schmetterer a friend from school days and studio times and after a few experiments at Wolfgang´s TAIGALAND-studio, they agreed, to cooperate in recording what from then on was called the “Camerado Project”. Starting from completely different musical directions they had chosen since their school days, this turned out to be a great advantage lifting the songs to a higher level. Whereas Jens has his roots in the singer-songwriter tradition, Wolfgang contributed his passion for sounds coming from his experience in electronic music. In this way a combination of acoustic guitar and synthesized sounds was formed, shaping the whole album. This was being completed by various vocal or instrumental contributions by the many musician friends, who Jens was happy to meet during the long time he spent with the International Songwriters Evening. Another sound dimension was added by everyday sounds, little field recordings recorded by Wolfgang and Jens and processed in the studio to form small audio dramas. Placed into or between the songs they not only create an ambience, but also connect the songs to a tonal unity, a dramaturgical master plan.
Thus as a whole “Camerado” not only is a collection of songs, but developed to be a story about life and friendship, the script for your own movie. Close your eyes, listen, tune in, enjoy!
