Album Notes
Soul showering dreams! A quick refreshing boost! A relaxing ritual! A long-awaited time-out! Soul Shower replenishes our spirit taking us on a musical journey thru original, poetic etchings by Jeri Brown plus new and classic vocal standards. With selections and arrangements that blur the lines between classic jazz, soul, R&B and world Soul Shower renders a perfect sensual and inspired vocal rendering of Jeri Brown, with guests Dwight Trible & Denise Cook through musical time travel! Instrumentalists Clayton Cameron, Adrian Jefferson, Trevor Ware, Woody Woods plus tasty percussive complements from studio engineer Scott Ferguson on drums add to the milieu.

Cleanse! (Soul Shower, The Feeling Keeps on Coming, I Got it Bad & That Ain’t Good)

Reflect! (You Needed Me, Hallelujah, People Make the World Go Round)

Rejuvenate! (Rise Consummate Listener, Rise Vocal Compatriot, Bridges, I Bow To You)

“Everyday life disappears behind a veil of sound. Listen and feel thousands of vocal musical droplets caress and overwhelm from head to toe in each soulful vocal silhouette. As Abbey Lincoln once sang, “the music is the magic…”. Absorb and let go of energy from the heart. Bathe and replenish through this magical music. In the words of Isaac Hayes, “You must remember your roots… A willow bends in the wind, the one that resists breaks. You have to store enough so when the hard times come, you can survive it. You got to constantly recreate yourself. You got to be loose and flexible to do so. You have to continue to expand."

Such is the aim of Soul Shower.”
- Jeri Brown

“I can’t begin to adequately express my pleasure at the outcome of this undertaking. I am humbled by each member of the project. Many thanks to you all!! It was my aim to have a cascade of emotive vocal qualities with soulful instrumental grooves colliding like running water for an effect of a musical shower of soulful etchings that hopefully would get people to nod to the beat in addition to feeling the colors, nuances and messages. Dwight’s voice just blows me away! What a presence! More than a voice, really! His vocal richness holds the key to true, pure vocal inspiration. Effortless! I felt so much emotion coming from his vocal chops that I relaxed and let him move the soul generator. Quite satisfying. I learned to let go in a vocal spree, frolicking and just being myself. Being whimsical and curious and respectful of the voice. We melded musically. I feel honored to have this chance to work with him. I hope this is just the beginning! Denise, soul sister with the contagious energy, is always profound and right on target with her professional voice. Whether spoken or sung, hers is of the highest order. I literally pulled my St. Louis lower vocal quality out of the vault on renderings He Needed Me, Hallelujah, People Make the World Go Round, and The Feeling Keeps On Coming. My original melodies and lyrics on Soul Shower, Rise Consummate Listener, Rise Vocal Compatriot, and I Bow To You began as poetic streams of consciousness from ‘on-the-spot’ musical interactions with Woody and rhythm tracks. In Soul Shower Woody provided his original kernel of tracks for me to play with. Many thanks, Woody. John Hicks once called me a vocal priestess. I honor that complement. I truly admired his artistry. Woody’s musicianship has a similar impact for me. If I have learned anything from working with gifted musicians it is to be humble to the vocal art form. This philosophy sustains and rejuvenates me.”

“Music is conversation. Jazz Music is an amazing and spontaneous conversation. And the results of these artists conversing is evident in each of the recordings on this project. Dwight Trible's extraordinarily soulful and sensitive vocals…Denise Cook's blazing spoken word performance…. and given Jeri's vocal delivery, relaxed, yet electric, it couldn't be better. The strong root of the project was of Jeri Brown's unique approach to production, using specific directions, which left lots of room for each artist's personality to shine through. Jeri's assemblage of artists was great. Everyone melded into a perfect unit, while expressing their wonderfully unique abilities. Clayton Cameron's steady, but very exciting drumming. Trevor Ware's solid, but colorful bass lines. Adrian Jefferson's Afro-Cuban rhythms dancing over, under, around and through each piece. This is well demonstrated in both the original compositions and the tunes, all of which are rich in diversity and creativity. The three recording sessions with Jeri Brown, at Dennis Moody's studio for this project, have been very creative, inspiring and exciting. Mr. Moody's experience and expertise, along with a magnificent grand piano and a very comfortable studio, made this project work perfectly. Everyone's professionalism and talent, created an atmosphere that was easy to work in, and with.”
- Woody Woods

“My definition of jazz is spontaneous creativity, having the courage to utter at the speed of thought whatever the spirit speaks into your spirit. Jeri is indeed obedient to the leading of the holy spirit of the universe. Jeri is an artist in the purest since of the word. I love that her desire is to create a living work of art at all times. That is her state of consciousness. This project is infectious. This is what I need! I have been studying Jeri to learn how to blend our two individual entities and hopefully we are doing that. We are creating a sound that has never been heard in this realm before. I want my voice to be in harmony with the molecules of the air like hers. This is an ideal rhythm section. You can’t go wrong here. With Woody, it’s a reunion. We worked together a whole lot back in the 80's. We have always had a natural simpatico I was saddened when he left Los Angeles. Trevor and I have been working together solidly for 25 years. Unbelievable! Clayton is the perfect drummer for any vocalist. He is in such high demand I had to give up on the idea of him being available for my group. In Jeri’s tune Soul Shower, Denise Cook said a word that’s very difficult to say over and over rapidly. That alone has me in awe and intrigued. To get magic it takes the right musicians, the right room and the right engineer. Dennis Moody understands that artists have very sensitive fragile constitutions. It’s deeper than words. It’s vibrations. Sometimes just a look can upset the balance. Working with an engineer with the wrong vibes is disastrous. Dennis is like a gentile breeze with loving sunshine.”
- Dwight Trible

"I really enjoyed helping Jeri to realize her musical vision! It was an honor to be involved with the fantastic musicians assembled for this awesome project! The set up at my studio was perfect for Jeri's needs. We were able to work fast and efficiently to get her what she was hearing musically. I really enjoyed Jeri's compositions and overall production style. This is a great project and it reminded me of all the great projects I did for the South L.A. jazz scene in the late 70's and 80's… this is REAL music!" About the vocal artistry of jazz singer, Jeri Brown, “Wonderful voice! A pleasure to work with!
- Dennis Moody
About the project, “It’s kinda magical!”
