Streamstory

by Jesse Sprinkle

"Sprinkle's music is sparse and spacious, moody but not gloomy. It's essentially the man and his guitar.... Sprinkle rifles around the thesaurus in his head, searching for an appropriate label before settling on 'darker pop.'"

‘Streamstory’ is the latest CD recording from Jesse Sprinkle. The music is about — and in memory of — Erik Secker, a man who was briefly Jesse’s friend until his passing last year at age 29.

Erik was the second sibling in his family to experience an untimely death. Just one brother survives. “There is no real magical story to our acquaintance,” Jesse relates. “He was a friend of a friend whom I met. He wasn’t a musician, but he really enjoyed music.”

Erik was employed at the meat department at Tops and had plans to pursue a career in meat cutting. He was a dedicated auto racing fan and frequent attendee at Watkins Glen. He also was a big Redskins fan. As an uncle, Erik was much loved by his two nieces and three nephews. Erik had given Jamie Sitterley a promise ring on Jamie’s birthday in September. He had purchased an engagment ring which Jamie would have received on Christmas, but Erik died three days before Christmas.

After Erik’s death, Jesse realized he was in a unique position to make a statement about Erik, and perhaps help Erik’s mom with some of the expenses connected with Erik’s hospital stay and funeral.

“A lot of people can help here,” Jesse suggests. “They just have to figure out what’s their niche for doing it. For me, it was making this recording.”

Jesse is owner of Bluebrick Recording Studios in East Avon. He is a talented guitarist and drummer, and a composer of original lyrical songs.

‘Streamstory’ began as a single song which Jesse and Steve Dahl, the friend who introduced Erik to Jesse, decided to compose. The song was meant as a modest gift to Erik’s mom and brother. “It was just a small act of love towards the family, but then it snowballed into a full length CD,” Jesse explained. “The music honors Erik and Erik’s family.”

As a CD, the unit has sales potential, and might be able to assist the family in some small way with their expenses.

In retrospect, the CD was a natural thing for Jesse to do: “I’ve always expressed my joys and sorrows and losses through music,” he maintains. Indeed, Jesse has on more than one occasion been asked to compose songs for memorial services. The 13 tracks on Streamstory represent a mixture of new and revamped material, all poured from Jesse’s heart.

“The theme is loss, but it’s loss with the glimmer of hope,” Jesse emphasizes.

Instrumentally, there is a lot of Jesse Sprinkle acoustic guitar (also his vocals, drums and piano) and a good deal of Aaron Hall’s violin. Supporting musicians include James Wright on bass guitar, Evan Thorpe on electric guitar and backup vocals by Amanda Sprinkle.

‘Streamstory’ can be purchased directly at Bluebrick Studios, at Buzzo’s in Geneseo, at assorted places of business in Avon, or ordered from Jesse Sprinkle through his website. Also, check out the video clip here which illustrates the making of “Streamstory,” and coveys the emotions that went into the mix.
