ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The third album for Nashville stalwarts John England & the Western Swingers, Open that Gate features 10 great originals and 3 songs popularized by Texas heroes Bob Wills, Milton Brown and Floyd Tillman.

As always with this band, variety keeps things spicy. Five different lead singers deliver a wide assortment of material. The Bob Wills-sounding title track, the pensive “Old Town”, the lively fiddle tune “Neely’s Bend Quick Step” and the sentimental “Waltz for Sue Ann” are among the valuable additions to the Western Swingers’ repertoire.

Featuring terrific art design by Garrett Rittenberry (Guerilla Design), and an environmentally friendly DigiPak case, Open that Gate was mostly mixed and mastered by Matt Spicher, who’s produced and engineered for big shots like Johnny Cash, Marty Stuart, and Pam Tillis.

Even if you’ve never caught one of the band’s sets at Robert’s Western World while knocking back a cold PBR and a cheeseburger, you’re really going to fall for this one.

Loved It!
I have to admit to not knowing a great deal about Western Swing as a genre, except some Bob Wills, so I wasn't sure what it would sound like from a modern band. What I found was a group of people who thoroughly understand what they're playing and love it. They don't try to restrict themselves by making a copy of the original style. They go all out and have fun. Would love to see them in concert sometime, but this is the next best thing! Thoroughly recommended.

Out here in West Texas there's two things we really go for and that's Rodeo and Western Swing! "Open That Gate" covers both bases and I can honestly say it's the best I've heard in long, long time. I've been on the air since 1970, so I should know when something good comes along and it has!!

... a carefree attitude with solid arranging and stellar playing! I eagerly play their tunes on “Sagebrush Boogie”, my weekly show on WRFG FM 89.3 Atlanta. Here’s hoping they continue to crank out such rewarding efforts as “Open that Gate” and take their music on tour…America needs to dance to this great music!

In a Perfect World...
...music like this would be at the top of charts. Problem is, that too few people get to hear it, because radio won't play it. So take my word for it: This is quality Country & Western Swing from a great Nashville. Had the pleasure of catching them live at Robert's in Nashville one hot Spring night in 2004. This is their 3rd album - and just as good as the two first.

Better than chocolate
My boyfriend and I love to dance to western swing -- and this is a fantastic album for doing just that. England has a fun-loving way about him that keeps you listening for his next comments. This band really swings and enjoys doing it!!
