Album Notes
Lovebrain is my manifesto. It is a labor of love that took me 9 months to record in 1994. At the time I was playing solo at The Hyatt in Smyrna,Ga. in a room called Pecan Alley. I saved my tip money and put it all into studio time. I built these tracks up little by little, starting with vocal drum sounds, adding drum and percussion samples that I played manually on an Ensoniq keyboard and adding some real drums, Guitar, many layers of keyboards, synth Bass, Vocals and the help of some great friends like Former Prince Trumpet Player Matt “Atlanta” Bliss who encouraged me and helped me get this cd done. Other friends who contributed are Atlanta Journeyman Guitarist Cooper Tisdale, Former True Grits bandmates Winn Sizmore(The Man Who Used To Hate Disco), and Mike Hinton, who add Bass and Drums to Parachute and Tongue Tied which features a blistering Cooper Guitar solo. Mike Hinton who has appeared on all but 2 of my 7 cd’s adds extra drums to 4 songs and co-wrote Farmers Market with me. My old partner Fred Crosby adds harmony to several songs and the cover of the cd features me and my wife Mindy at a Halloween party dressed as 50’s teenagers in love.
Musically this is my most eclectic cd. It’s all over the map expressing some of my diverse influences-The Beach Boys/Todd Rundgren//Joni Mitchell-George Duke, Keith Jarret/Prince/ and Frank Zappa. Billy’s Deli has always been a favorite of mine and it’s the oldest song of the collection. I wrote and recorded the original version in 1985 in L.A.. This re-recorded version features my son at age 6 recreating one of the spoken lines.

Mindy#16 was written in 1987 and has always been special to me. There is a vocal version also that appears on my 5th cd Restrooms For Restaurant Customers Parts 2 and 3.
The rest of the songs were written in Atlanta after we moved here in 1988.
Each song tells something about me, my life and the people in it. I have made 6 other cd’s and while each one has meaning and value to me, this is the one that tells you who I am. This is my testament and Philosophy in words and music.

January 30th 2007 marks the re-release of my 1994 debut cd-Lovebrain
Here are some observations on the songs 13 years on-

1. Partly Cloudy#2-

The 2nd Partly Cloudy is the first song on the Lovebrain album. I wrote it one overcast day in 1993. It was first performed live by The True Grits reunion band at an all night gig/video session near Georgia Tech at a club called The Wreck Room. I called the band Lovebrain. When I began to record the Lovebrain project. This was among the first batch of songs that I recorded using vocal drumming to shape the rhythm track. I was initially planning to do the whole album this way but wound up going another direction. 3 of the songs on the album survived, this one being a sort of doo-wop in 7/4 exercise in fun.

2. At The Piano Bar-
The story of my journey as a piano player-refer to my bio at for the details or just listen to the song.

Played for Fools and Kings
Did the Roller Disco Thing
It feels so good to sing
I'll play later if you stay awhile.

3. Meditation-
Something I've done since 1974. This funky groove was made even funkier by the Trumpet playing of Matt" Atlanta" Bliss who used to say it reminded him of Strawberry Letter #23 by Shuggie Otis.

4. Billy's Deli-
Billy's Deli is a place and a song close to my heart. It's real place and it inspired me then as well as now. the original demo version was produced by Tommy Dunbar of The Rubinoos. Guest's on this version include Ellie Aronoff and a very young Bill(Jared) Graham. I play everything including my trusty Melodica.

5. Mindy #16-
The 16th is a song cycle of songs for my beloved wife. An instrumental version of a song I wrote in Silver Lake just before we left L.A. Mike Hinton plays additional drums, I play the rest.

6. Wasted Time-
Some nifty finger picking thanks to good friend Cooper Tisdale, some snare and bass drum from me along with bass and piano.

7. World That Cares-
Written with the hope and belief that we may one day truly become a World The Cares.
In memory of our dear friend Chuck Howard who introduced us to Atlanta. Chuck passed away from aids in 1989 and this song was written to honour him and all those we've lost in the hopes that we will someday truly be a World That Cares.

8. Gays In The Military- Several of my instrumental titles are taken from headlines and slogans that I hear on the news. This one shows some of my odd meter roots as well as giving me a chance to really stretch out on lead synth. I Play all the parts song which shows some of my Zappa and Utopia influence, The fender Stratacaster was very kind to me.

9. Partly Cloudy#1-
The slow dreamy version of the song that started the album. A personal favorite of mine. I was happy with the vocal, the improvised piano intro. Matt's Trumpet and Flugelhorn parts which he improvised in first takes are breathtaking.

10. Parachute-
A rocker inspired by a certain Any Griffith show episode. Dedicated to Jack Dodson who portrayed Howard Sprague on both the Andy Griffith show and Mayberry R.F.D.
Features the True Grits rhythm section Winn Sizemore and Mike Hinton on Bass and Drums.

11. Pleasure Island-
Vocal assistance from my old friend Fred Crosby. I play and sing the rest. Another way to say just say no, brought on while watching Disney's Pinocchio.

12. Mother P.-
For my Mother in Law. In memory of Norma Bates Parvin.

13. Pecan Alley-
The name of the place I was gigging back in 93/94 when this music was recorded. A jazz/funk tune that show's my debt to some of my keyboard influences.

14. Tongue Tied-
Winn and Mike anchor the rhythm section and Cooper joins us half way through for a blistering guitar solo and for the end section which used to be called The Market Square Ballet when played by True Grits in 88-90. This piece shows the link from my L.A. power pop/fusion band Section 8 to True Grits in it's combination of New Wave rock with open jazz improv and odd meter composition.

15. Farmers Market-
Longtime drummer and friend Mike Hinton put this one together with me. Inspired by the Dekalb Farmers Market.

16. For A Reason-
The influences on this song include, Rodger's and Hammerstein, and Dennis Wilson. It was included on the 2005 compilation Two Steps Forward a tribute to Brian and Dennis Wilson. I conclude the album with this love poem for my inspiration, my wife of 23 years Mindy who posed with me for the album cover at a Halloween party. We were dressed as teenagers in love and love is what this album is all about.
