Album Notes
A player in the Northeast Ohio scene of the 1970's and 80's which featured Alex Bevan, Michael Stanley, John Bassette, Charlie Wiener and a host of other contemporaries, Jim Ballard wrote and recorded a half dozen albums during that time. Starting with his first album, Southside Days, then on to Thunderhead, Into The Heartbeat, Speed Demons and topping off with the live double disc offering In The Wings, Ballard turned out a body of work that grew more mature with each effort. In the early '90's, Ballard got off the road and the treadmill and began producing other bands and songwriters, including Charlie Wiener, Jon Mosey, Evan Davis and a tribute compilation of John Bassette's songs featuring such songwriters as Tom Paxton, Don Dixon and Marti Jones, Alex Bevan, Charlie Wiener and Jim Gill, all great songwriters in their own right. In recent years he has turned his attention to writing music for film, including the scores for the films Sarah's Choice, Nora Falls, Horrors Of War and Imperfections. Wood And Wire is a set of songs, all of which were written by a young Ballard at the start of his song writing career but never recorded or featured on an album until now. Bringing together the young songwriter and the mature producer, the songs were all newly recorded within a several month period in 2010 with an ear to retaining the point of view of the young man who wrote them, but informed by the life experience and skills of the matured artist. With that in mind, this collection nods to Ballard's early influences, running from Pentangle to Tom Waits to Gordon Lightfoot to Alex Bevan. Listen closely and you'll hear them between the lines.
