I Like Presents

by Jim Morris

I must confess that it was difficult getting motivated to do a Christmas record, especially during the summer. But once I got in the studio, it all came together, and it might be the best Christmas record in the history of mankind. At least, it is the best one I ever recorded. The title is I Like Presents and check out the liner notes and the song list-

Album Notes
Well, well, well…finally a Christmas CD. The origins of this record go back to Christmas of 1997 when I first made up lyrics to The Twelve Days of Christmas during a show at the Nav-A-Gator. It became the first Nav-A-Gator Christmas Show, a tradition that has continued every year since. For years the show consisted of one song, then Duke Davis introduced me to X-mas on the Isthmus, and the set list doubled. After Hurricane Charley in 2004, Jim Cantore’s Coming to Town made an appearance. Eventually I added Mason Dixon’s on the Line, a song from my New Orleans days, brought to me by my friend Mike Rucker and his eclectic record collection.

Before I knew it, I had over 10 minutes of riveting holiday magic. A Christmas record was inevitable and a force that could not be stopped. I added the Robert Earl Keen classic, Merry Christmas from the Family, and as a nostalgic indulgence, Senor Santa Claus. My parents were Jim Reeves fans, and during the holidays they played his album, Twelve Songs of Christmas, a lot. I mean a lot. I was just a child, and my favorite song on the album was Senor Santa Claus.

I wrote some original songs, included a new and jazzier version of 12:15 A.M. on New Year’s Day, mixed with egg nog and Basil Hayden, and voila, a Christmas record. I hope it brings you good cheer and brightens your holiday spirit. If you want to show your appreciation, remember I Like Presents.
