Album Notes
Jimmy Payne is an entertainer who, as he comments, comes from the heart of rural America.
Born in Arkansas, grew up in Missouri, is the youngest of eleven children.
He learned to play Guitar at the age of sixteen. While still in his teens, he, and his niece Betty, had there on Radio Show over KTCB in Malden Missouri.
His Teenage dreams were mostly filled with country songs, and visions of living in Nashville while dragging a nine foot cotton sack through rows of Southeast Missouri cotton fields.
Picking cotton was a hard way to earn money, however, commonplace in those days.
In 1966, he signed a five year contract with Epic Records. His first single with Epic "What Does I t Take"' became a hit in a few markets and sold several thousand records but never gathered enough momentum to break into the Billboard national charts. Six months later, his close friend Jim Glaser,
was working on a new song and asked Jimmy to help finish it. They wrote on it all night and by morning it was finished.. In a couple weeks Jimmy recorded it for his second single under the direction of legendary producer Billy Sherrill. The song was Woman, Woman,” have you got cheating on your mind”. A couple months later his record was playing on the Radio in Los Angeles, Columbia Record Producer, Jerry Fuller, heard it and took it to a group he had just signed. The group was Gary Puckett, and The Union Gap . The song has been recorded around a hundred times, and according to BMI, played more than four million times on U.S. Radio alone
In 1969 Jimmy recorded The Dick Feller song, L.A.Angels, Taking it to 21 in the national charts
Other national charts records were "Ramblin' Man,'Where has all the love gone" "Tonight's The Night Miss Sally Testifies" and "Turnin' My Love on".

Prestigious venues Jimmy has played, include, " The Grand Ole Opry" "Golden Nugget" Las Vegas,"Wheeling Jamboree", Wembly Festival, London, England", and "Peterborough Festival"

"Sweet Fantasy"

This is what "real" country music is all about!
Maybe it is because I am mature in years and the majority of music I hear coming out of Nashville these days makes me cringe - so how refreshing it was to listen to this CD by Jimmy Payne. To me, this is what real country music is all about. I was already familiar with Jimmy's music having earlier bought his When Mama Prayed CD, but Pieces Of Life is really excellent and offers great value for money with 20 tracks of country music as it should be without being over produced. It was also pleasing to hear Jimmy's own compositions that have been recorded by other country singers - like, for example, Don't Say Love which was recorded by Connie Smith and Daniel O'Donnell; The Weight Of My Chains that was covered by Tompall & the Glaser Brothers; My Eyes Can Only See As Far As You which sold a million for Charley Pride and Cheatin' Turns Her On that Jo-El Sonnier recorded. A wonderful selection of songs but I think one of my own personal favourites has to be Mansion In Spain. This CD is brilliant and I have never stopped playing it!

I've been a fan of Jimmy Payne for decades. His warm, mellow tones give the traditional country music he loves and respects a special earthy sound. Jimmy will always remain true to his beginnings, and his fans love it!
