ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Greed, love, learning: here's how Jim wraps his head (and voice) around the stuff that comes at us each day. Jim's life has carried him from his childhood in Oregon to Africa, the US Southwest, and the California coast. Now back in Oregon, Jim sings these life experiences in a medley of styles, backed by his guitar or piano and some fabulous Portland-area musicians (and family!).

This debut EP was recorded at Kung Fu Bakery Studio in Portland, Oregon, and engineered/produced by Dean Baskerville, with cover design graphics by Marielle Tollis. Jim supplied the songs, arrangements, his voice, and all piano and guitar; his daughters Elise and Joy did backup vocals, with Scott Steed on bass and Jeramy Burchett on rhythm. Instrumental solos were contributed by top Portland musicians Clark Bondy (alto sax), Lex Browning (fiddle), and Steve Christofferson (melodica). Thanks to each and every one of you for your musicality and passion. Below are the lyrics/credits.

Fire (Lobamba, Swaziland)

There's a fire burning on a hill
And it sure looks like a runaway
There's a fire burning on a hill
And I can't imagine how to save my life.

There's a fire riding on the wind
And the smoke obscures the setting sun
There a fire riding on the wind
And it's hard to see just where or if to run.

Now there's a fire raging in my soul
It was obvious I'd never flee
Cause there's a fire raging in my soul
For I dreamed I ran and passed an old man, he
Turned and smiled and said
Soon you'll join the dead.

Now there's a fire running through my veins
And it boils the blood a burning red
There's a fire running through my veins
And it throws me round in hatred, or in love.

Life, we fill it with desire
To love as we want and hate as we please
Oh, we've filled our hearts with fire,
To burn as we will, a cruel disease
We the fiery red soon will join the dead.

We, the victims of desire
We live as we want and not as we need
Oh, we've set this world afire
It's turning around, burning with greed.

Let us move ahead
Let us leave the dead
Let us kill the beast
Let us share the feast
Let us all forgive
Let us learn to live.

Lead vocals/guitar: Jim
Background vocals: Jim/Joy/Elise
Alto Sax: Clark Bondy
Bass: Scott Steed
Rhythm: Jeramy Burchett, Dean Baskerville

Sally (Portland, Oregon)

I'm reckless, you're guarded
One feeds the other
If I said why bother
What would you say?

I'm aging, you're almost young
Both feed our fears
No matter the years
What of today?

Sally, can we come a little closer?
We may find we're much the same
Sally, we won't have this chance forever
To run away would be such a shame.

I'm rainy, you're sunny
A difference of weather
Mix them together,
Could be stormy indeed.

I'm jaded, you're half naive
Open and closed
But don't you suppose
It's just what we need?

Sally, can we see what we're doing?
In and out, high and low
Sally, there's a world and it's waiting
Can you see? It's waiting I know.

Sally, we've got all kinds of reasons
Tearful boy, fearful girl
Sally, can we leave it all behind us?
Can we meet in this beautiful world?

Lead vocals/piano: Jim
Background vocals: Joy/Elise
Melodica: Steve Christofferson
Bass: Scott Steed
Rhythm: Jeramy Burchett

Academic Blues (Berkeley, California)

We all climb aboard this ride and we leave the world outside
We sit at our desk and tie the seat belt round our chair
Prepare for liftoff to our journey in the air.

And yet I wonder where we're bound? It's so hard to see the ground
There's no gravitation, we're just floating 'round in space
It's time I headed home to see a human face.

And yet we study 'til we're blind in this academic grind
We keep our eyes glued to the book
No time to stop and take a look

At this real world spinning 'round, it's our own world spinning 'round
We can't forget our human hearts
We must not keep ourselves apart.

We gotta turn this ship around, bring it closer to the ground
We must not lose ourselves in words
There is a story to be heard.
But we've got to listen

Lead vocals/guitar: Jim
Background vocals: Jim/Joy/Elise
Fiddle: Lex Browning
Bass: Scott Steed
Rhythm: Jeramy Burchett
