ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
'Il Progetto D'amore' is a collection of experimental and conventional music for acoustic guitar ensembles. Every sound on this record comes from an acoustic guitar. This is a collection of music inspired by, and also acknowledging and appreciating some of my roots.

The Guitars

'Il Progetto' is in three parts.

Pieces 1 through 5, 'Cantilenare', 'Illimitato Salterello', 'Magnolia Valzer', 'Entusiasmo', and 'Solare', were recorded using a Martin OOOC-16RGTE acoustic-electric guitar. This is a fine Martin guitar, steel strings ( I used 10s), good sounding plugged or unplugged. The Fishman Aura system is in my opinion one of the best acoustic pick-up systems for a steel string guitar.

Pieces 6 through 8, 'Galleggiante', 'Rabbrividere', and 'Colibri', were recorded using a Cordoba FCWE Reissue nylon string electric-acoustic guitar with the Prefix Pro Blend pickup system. The Pro Blend is in my research the best system for a nylon string acoustic-electric guitar. Right now, this my favorite guitar. I can't say enough about this guitar, the action is perfect, the woods are lovely, the tone is very good for a nylon string acoustic-electric. If you like nylon strings and play in a crossover type of situation where you might play jazz or latin and classical or flamenco, get this guitar. I used D'addario Pro-Arte high tension strings on all cuts. Recently I have switched to Savarez high tension strings which are a little brighter and somehow more exotic sounding for what I do.

Piece 9, 'Fiorire', was recorded using my Epiphone PE-6E electric-acoustic guitar with steel strings, I used 9's on this cut. The Epiphone is my handy go to guitar. The guitar is made of a lot of maple laminate wood and so the tone is bright on recordings. I've used this guitar on my last four CD's.

For The Techies And Tech Curious

I used the above guitars direct into a MOTU Micobook interphase connected USB style, not Firewire, into a MacBook computer. I use Digital Performer recording software. All multi-track guitar recording has to be done using headphones or you are going to be bouncing the sound of previous tracks from your speaker system right through the guitar over and over. You have to use headphones, like it or not

All of the sounds on this collection come from the guitar. I used two external effects to alter sounds - the E Bow, and the Bomber Polyphonic Pitch Shifter. Also I used effects found in Digital Performer especially - delays, reverbs, panning effects, distortion, reversing sounds, looping, along with various editing techniques.

Last Word

Our excellent friend and fellow composer Richard Lainhart passed away in December 2011. 'Solare' is dedicated to Richard. I spent many years working with Richard and he has left an unforgettable impression on me not just about music but about life.
