Hoggett Heads

by Jim Shelley & Book of Kills

'Many so-called lo-fi home-taper types wear their solipsism like a badge, recoiling at the prospect of letting others into their world, or at least holding them at arm's length with long-distance postal collaborations. Not so with Jim Shelley. He's released many a fine solo recordings under the Book Of Kills moniker but has always yearned for a real band to give his tunes life, a desire repeatedly frustrated over the years as one combo after the other fell apart. At last, in late 2000, Jim hooked up with Jane and Casey Firkin and Book Of Kills "The Band" was born. With Lisa Van Fossen on bass, a debut EP arrived in early 2001, offering the dual treats of live drums, courtesy of Casey, and vocal and writing duties shared with guitarist Jane. The brief but rockin' EP bade well for BOK's future, and now here comes the full-length follow-up, Hogget Heads. Kids, this is rrrrrrrreal rock n' roll! From "Abandoned", the slammin', biblical opener, to the wild, cathartic cover of Lou Reed's "I C

Hoggett Heads

Abandoned (Shelley)

School girl sits by the phone all day
She’s just waiting for a call
But you know she know that phone oh know
It don’t never ring at all

She feels so abandoned
She feels so abandoned
She feels so abandoned
She feels so—

Soldier lie awake in his bed at night
He feels the fear and doubt inside
You know you know what he want ain’t right
But now it’s just a matter of pride

And he feels so abandoned—

There is truth and there is untruth
To be a minority of one does not make you mad

Blessed are the poor in spirit
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven
Blessed are those who mourn
For they shall be comforted
Blessed are the meek
For they shall inherit the earth
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness
For they shall be—
Abandoned

Preacher stands at the pulpit
Somebody left him there alone
This hopeless feeling he can’t stop it
Everywhere he looks all he sees is flesh and bone

And he feels so abandoned—

Cave In (J. Firkin)

I heard your words and no cute little boys
Are out to take over this girl
Well I’ve bitched and screamed
Over what’s been handed to me by this world—
Hey!

Tell me what did you mean don’t beat my brain
A mouth full of you and I crack, cave in, dive in, insane—Hey!

After all, this has been done before
No cigarettes, no sex
Only ashes after this war
Well it turned and cracked and I’ve died
I’m never coming back from this trip
I’ve been a fool and is it any wonder?
Hey!

Driving down false spiral—glide in, cave in
Squealing like a choir of virgins in the mother’s eye
Tell me what did you mean don’t beat my brain
A mouth full of you and I crack, cave in, dive in, insane—
Hey!

Accidentally Naked (Shelley)

What’s perfect for you? How much is too much?
It’s the toughest call when you begin to lose touch
It’s human position holding hands in the bed
My favorite escape—the things we never said

The further I go it seems the less I know—

When you come as you must to the streets of my city
Leave your memory behind but bring your self-pity
Is it my body you want or the way I perceive you?
The lies we tell until we think they’re true

The further I go it seems the less I know—

Running (J. Firkin, Shelley)

You fall in love just to break up
Why does that seem so mean?
I must be solid I must be stable
I must remember to breathe

We’re always smiling
But no one can see
I’m runnin’
I’m runnin’
I’m runnin’

Could you never believe in me?
Even through times like these?
I know I shouldn’t care
You’re your own man
Sometimes I feel like a child
Trying to be so cool
This has never been one of my
Best rejections

And I’m sorry we have receded
You’re still so dear to me
It’s not my fault
It’s not your fault
It’s just one of those things

We’re always smiling
But no one can see
I’m running—

To Dream A New Dream (Shelley)

Lying in a field of sighs
Arm in arm beneath the summer skies
Let our souls sweet be undone
In crazy fevers that fly up to the sun

Two bodies lying in the dark
Hands amazed—our skin alive with sparks
Strike my eyes, strike my heart
You fill the space of all the empty parts

It’s too late
It’s too late
It’s too late to dream a new dream

I’ve made mistakes—too many wrongs
To ever set things right
But if I break would you be strong
Enough to pull me through this night?

Is it too late
Is it too late
Is it too late
To dream a new dream?

Face* (J. Firkin)

The first time that I saw you I knew
Pouring over me and I’m pouring over you

Each time we make love—you smile about us

Even the guitars are all out of tune
Leafless trees pray to an almost full moon
Undisturbing pleasures near a dusty womb

Each time we make love—you smile
Each time we make love—you smile about us

What are you craving for?
And I know how beautiful this is
But I know I’ll turn around and you’re gone

Feeling so in love or is the wool over my eyes?
I’m tired of playing dead—I wanna feel like a real babe
Tongues snaking through lips, my lips, or your lips

Each time we make love—you smile
Each time we make love—you smile about us

I Hang Heavy (Shelley)

Thoughts break in my mind like glass
Next thing I know I’m in the oven dreaming
You wake me when they turn the neon off
Morphine at five—a cold dawn breaking

I hang heavy in the universe
I hang heavy in the universe
I hang heavy in the universe
The coming is bad but the going is worse

You love me tighter than the ropes that bind
Your palms and soul to the edge of the bed
What couldn’t we do on a night like this?
Don’t listen to me ‘cause I’m not even close

I hang heavy in this universe—

Gemini* (J. Firkin)

Don’t blame me for your unconscious paranoia's
Don’t say I’m to blame for your midnight terrors
I lie awake and I hear you dreaming

Don’t say you can’t stay—
I need you here

I think I am disappearing—
Do you see me?
Standing by your side—
Do you see me?
Nuclear fusion
But close behind is confusion

Don’t say you can’t stay—
I need you here

Holding you closer—
Do you feel you need me?
Out the door and out of sight—
I’ll see you some other time
Do you miss me?
There’s no reason

Don’t say you can’t stay—
I need you here with me

Just An Average Day (Shelley)

I wake up and go to work
And later I will come back home
Hug the dogs and pat the kids
And then I’ll sit and rest awhile

It’s just an average day
It’s just an average day
It’s just an average day in my average life

Wife comes home and I make dinner
‘Cause she doesn’t like to cook
Then I’ll go out for a walk
The same walk I take every night

It’s just an average day—

Sometimes I wonder who I’d be
If I’d done this or maybe that
Sometimes I wonder who I’d be

Tuck the wife and kids in for the night
And then I’ll go outside
Stare up at the stars—you never know
What you might see—you never know

It’s just an average day—

Sweet* (J. Firkin)

Sweet like a child
Like you are
The ocean runs ‘round my thighs

Soft and sensational
Only one time, then all
You need are just lies

I can’t imagine
What it is like to be you
‘Cause I’ve always been like me

Sweet like a child
Like you are
Don’t be a whore like me

Bad Person (Shelley)

I’m a bad person
I was born bad
I live a bad life
I’ll probably die bad

I’m so crazy
I’m just evil
I’m just dirt on the heel of your boot
I’m so filthy
I’m so fucked up
I’m so bad that it ain’t even cute

I’m a bad person
I watch tv
It gives me bad thoughts
It makes me do bad things

I’m a bad person
I kicked a dog once
I read comic books
I even spit on sidewalks

I’m so crazy—

I’m a bad person
I was born bad
I live a bad life
I’ll probably die bad

I’m a bad person
Yes I’m so guilty
I should be punished
For all the bad things I do

I’m so crazy—

I Was Wrong* (J. Firkin)

All has forgiven me
Fools love to be loved
Even myself
Even myself
Even myself

But I was wrong

Two steps out the door
And I think this was wrong
I’m leaving by myself
Leaving by myself
Leaving by myself

And I was wrong
