ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Fear + Whiskey
Anthology 2010-2013 (Revised & Expanded)

1. Hold The Wind* (3:47) Just Amy, Jeff and me, three amateur lovers of music trying our best to play some pure fuzzed out folk rock...what F+W were all about in the beginning. Recorded live at Gary Bugg's practice space in McGaheysville, VA, May 20, 2011.
2. Cold Rain And Snow* (4:45) Always a favorite at the few shows we played. Recorded live at Gary Bugg's practice space in McGaheysville, VA, May 20, 2011. Additional instrumentation added June 11, 2011.
3. Blue Heart Drumming* (2:47) The first song Amy & I wrote together. Recorded live at Gary Bugg's practice space in McGaheysville, VA, May 20, 2011. Additional instrumentation added June 11, 2011.
4. I Fell Inside Live on WXJM** (3:17) One of a number of BOK songs Fear + Whiskey ended up playing. Originally debuted on 1996's SPLENDID TRIGGER. Recorded live on public radio station WXJM, March 1, 2012. This was Zack Simpson's first show with us after only a few weeks of practice.
5. Lost Highway* (2:06) Punked up Hank, Sr. Loved playing it live, but the solos were always tough to pull off for me. Recorded live at Gary Bugg's practice space in McGaheysville, VA, June 6, 2011. Additional instrumentation added June 12, 2011.
6. Carry Me* (2:59) I thought this was one of the better songs I wrote during the F+W years.
7. Jesco White Live in Concert* (2:29) From a live performance at the Little Grill in Harrisonburg, VA, March 1, 2013. The lyrics to this song are so easy to remember, but I usually managed to forget some of them.
8. Man in a Long Black Coat* (3:45) The (relatively) little-known modern-day Dylan classic. Amy always sang this one so great. Recorded live at Gary Bugg's practice space in McGaheysville, VA, June 6, 2011. Additional instrumentation added June 11, 2011.
9. Few & Far* (4:37) I got the inspiration for this song on the way to practice from a church's bulletin sign. Crowds seemed to love it, but unfortunately we didn't do it very often live. Recorded live at Gary Bugg's practice space in McGaheysville, VA, June 6, 2011. Additional vocals and instrumentation added June 13, 2011.
10. Shake My Tree* (3:24) This is probably the prototypical F+W song, but it first showed up on 2008's THIS IS YOUR BOOK OF KILLS. Recorded live at Gary Bugg's practice space in McGaheysville, VA, June 6, 2011. Additional instrumentation added June 11, 2011.
Bona Fide* (4:16) My favorite F+W recording. A little studio trickery here and there. I worked like the dickens on the mix of this one. Recorded live at Gary Bugg's practice space in McGaheysville, VA, June 6, 2011. Additional instrumentation added June 11-16, 2011.
12. Marzipan Day Live in Concert* (3:08) Originally a popular BOK song. Recorded live, August 13, 2011, at the Blow Up the Moon festival.
13. For What It's Worth Live in Practice** (5:28) Recorded live a practice session, January 30, 2012. Always great fun to do. We made it different enough that it wasn't a classic rock cliché.
14. Heaven Live on WXJM** (4:57) First appeared on 1992's THE HAUNTED LIFE. Recorded live on WXJM, March 1, 2012. Great, concise drum solo by Zack.
15. Running Live in Practice** (3:32) The one and only song Jane Firkin and I wrote together. Never got tired of playing this one live. Powerful vocal by Amy.
16. Blue Man Live in Concert*** (3:41) Also originally from 1992's THE HAUNTED LIFE. F+W did it pretty well. Live at the Little Grill, March 1, 2013.
17. Bike*** (1:22) The one and only time we played this one live. Great intro for “Stanley The Steamer”. From the September 1, 2012, Blow Up the Moon festival.
18. Stanley the Steamer*** (5:18) A BOK warhorse. But I don't think I ever tire of playing it live. From the September 1, 2012, Blow Up the Moon Festival.
19. To Dream a New Dream*** (3:44) Just about every band I'm in seems to end up learning this song. By the end of Fear + Whiskey's run I think we began to morph into Book of Kills. I guess that's a good thing. Largely recorded live in the studio on a Tascam Portastudio, July 2013, as were the following two songs, with two microphones on the drums and one apiece on the other instruments and voices.
20. Fade*** (4:18) I think Amy really liked playing this one live. It was more BOK-ish than F+W-ish, but I always liked playing it live.
21. The Pleasures of Saying Goodbye*** (3:40) Another song that crowds seemed to really respond to positively. Amy sang it great and the band kicks ass.
22. Blue Heart Drumming Live on WXJM** (2:49) Spirited rendition of one of the very first songs Amy and I wrote together. From the March 1, 2012, performance.
23. Thin Moon and Sky Live on WXJM** (5:07) From the March 1, 2012, performance. It was no small feat for the three of us to come up with nearly two hours' worth of material required to play this show, especially considering Zack had only joined the band a few weeks previously. When the announcer asked us if we had “one more song” I'll have to admit I was relieved to be wrapping the show up. And yes, we did have one more.
