Jim Weider—the Telecaster devotee breath's new life into the genre pioneered by
Jim Weider
While prog rock and neo-Baroque shred are still highly abundant these days,
quality straight-ahead instrumental rock seems to be in shorter supply. With
Percolator, though, Jim Weider—the Telecaster devotee and sideman par
excellence—seems on a mission to breath new life into the genre pioneered by
Jeff Beck and other singer-less rockers. Sure, there are welcome traces of
outside musical styles on Weider’s new disc—a sprig of fusion here, a snippet of
hip hop there, a mandatory funk breakdown over yonder—but the fat-crackin’ snare
drum, all-engulfing B-3 swells, warm glow-bottle guitar tones, compelling riffs,
and other timeless elements of straight-up rock refuse to be diluted by any
eclecticisms from the outside. The compositions are rich, layered, and complex,
and the mix is superb. Weider, who is perhaps best known for being Robbie
Robertson’s replacement in the re-launch of The Band, never succumbs to the
temptation every instrumental rocker faces—the near-irresistible urge to weigh
songs down with indulgent overdubbing. Sure, a couple of vamps drift dangerously
close to the soothing, but fully un-rocking territory we call smooth jazz (let’s
face it—a rock record can only be so edgy without a singer up front spittin’
from the gut) but, in general, this disc kicks. You’ll be proud to bump
Percolator (which features guest virtuosos such as Sid McGinnis, John Medeski,
Rodney Holmes, and Tony Levin) through your favorite pair of woofers. Moon Haw.

David Malachowski /Chronogram review

Weider's guitar work is often fast, furious, and fluid, but he never overplays.
Venerable guitarist (and former member of The Band) Jim Weider has assembled an all-star cast—Tony Levin, John Medeski, Sid McGinnis Rodney Holmes and Randy Ciarlante, and producer John Holbrook—as he steps slightly away from his musical roots on his latest release, PERCoLAToR. Well, more than slightly. He comes out blazing in the rock/fusion fueled "The Maze," where he wails and squeals his way through a catchy tune. Hard-hitting title track "Percolator" is propelled by funk elements, while the gorgeous melodies of "New Day" and "Smooth Move" juxtapose the muscular, heavy hitting "Troll." The real departures, "Flight" and "Rain Daze," are stocked with synth bass and drum programming and sound quite contemporary.

Intelligent compositions, great playing, well recorded, good interplay of musici
I had never heard of Jim Weider before, but after hearing this CD he is obviously a great player as well as a great writer. It's not easy to write good instrumentals in a rock format. Without vocals telling a story or theme the composition and interplay of the musicians must engage the listener's attention 100%. Jim Weider has done it very well and this work has been recorded very well for a nice big sound. All the other musicians are very good. The drummer and bass guitarist in particular caught my ear from the very beginning as being outstanding players. But the keyboard player also has a very important part in coloring the music and enhancing it's sophistication. If you like smart and engaging instrumental music in a rock vein this is a great CD.

With his third solo album, a self-described "groove guitar fest," Weider is read
The all-instrumental "Percolator" teeters between rock, jazz and blues with
multilayered guitars and mutating moods that recall Joe Satriani, Charlie
Hunter and Danny Gatton. With all-star backing from the likes of John
Medeski and Tony Levin, Weider puts on a clinic in clean, atmospheric

''Percolator,'' his latest album and one that stretches the concept of a ''jam b
The songs on the CD bounce from jam band symphonies to tunes that fall between a dirge and a ballad, punctuated by the very, very lonely guitar notes that Weider tugs from his guitar strings.

Helping Weider navigate his trademark Fender Telecaster sound through the exploratory nooks and crannies of the jam band solar system are two of that genre's heavy hitters.
Playing on ''Percolator'' are Rodney Holmes, drummer for the Steve Kimock Band, and pianist and keyboard player John Medeski, a resident of the Woodstock area and member of the improvisational trio Medeski, Martin & Wood.

The title "Percolator" is appropriate as this music is bouncy and rhythmic
The music on the CD "Percolator" is bouncy and rhythmic. The nice interplay of guitar in it's many voices adds to the overall texture.
In fact, althought all these pieces are instumentals, it has a feel of a conversation between the guitars, keyboards and a terrific rhythm section.
These are well crafted selections from the high energy of "Flight" to the sweet reverant "Prayer" that closes "Percolator.
This is a CD for those who respect musicianship, arrangement and expertly crafted melodies.
Well done!
