Album Notes

What the critics wrote after his latest tour of Italy (Aug-Sept 2003):

"...exquisite Gershwin..."

"...a romantic pianist...with a particular sensibility for Schumann."

"...his Beethoven sonata was beautifully balanced...rich in textural subtleties."

(taken from a review in L'Arena by Chiara Zocca after Gargiulo's performance at the Philharmonic Hall in Verona, during a season also featuring conductors, Zubin Mehta and Kurt Masur and pianists, Murray Perahia and Grigory Sokolov.)

Julian Lawrence Gargiulo has performed in the United States, Italy, France, Germany and Russia, and always met with both critical and public acclaim. After his Washington debut at the U.S. State Department, the critics said "...Mr. Gargiulo's powerful energy enveloped his audience."(State Magazine) In Germany "...all the elements for an International career are present: talent, musicality, technique and charisma."(Garmisch-Partenkirchner Tagblatt) In New York "...a kind of playing reminiscent of Cortot and Rubinstein." (America Oggi) After his 1997 debut performance at Carnegie Hall, which was recorded by RAI-International television, he was invited back to perform the following two seasons.

Along with Mr. Gargiulo's busy schedule of solo engagements, he performs regularly with a variety of other instrumentalists and singers. Recent collaborations include recitals with the Russian soprano Olga Makarina (Metropolitan Opera) and the trumpet player Josef Burgstaller (Canadian Brass).

Born and educated in Italy, his studies began at the Verona State Conservatory, and continued at the Academy in Rome. After a one-year internship at the Moscow State Conservatory, he came to the United States, where he received his Bachelor's Degree from Rowan University, his Master's Degree at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, and in 2001 completed his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the University of Maryland. His principal teachers were Randone, Ciccolini, Mezhlumov, Zuponcic, Slutsky, and Rodriguez. Mr. Gargiulo serves on the piano faculty at the Westerhoff School of Music, the Piano School of NYC, and is the Music Director of the Sacred Heart Concert Series of Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Gargiulo currently resides in New York City.

Yeah, yeah, another...Oh my G-o-d...!
I was not initially enthusiastic about ordering this CD...I figured it would be another expert pianist doing well-tread classical music. To me, the great artists generally got only one thing or the other really right -- either perfect technique, touch and timing, or inspirational expression of emotion. I, personally, never before heard both mastery and empathy in full force. But that is exactly what I hear on this CD. Total beauty, full force. I couldn't believe it. I love it. I just about swoon to it. Despair, angst, elation, and calm borne on fluid, unself-conscious metrics. Breathless tenderness, and crashing drama, with extraordinary sense for exactly when and how those notes cascade, just so, every one. I have my friends listen to this CD. "Yeah, yeah", I see on their faces to start. They try to carry on a conversation, but lose their place. Then they can't start or finish a sentence, then they stare in awe at the stereo cabinet...and say "w-o-w", almost inaudibly, faces gone blank. Their eyes get bigger, then they turn and ask seriously "What's this guy's name again? How did you find him?". And I grin conspiratorially, like "it really is the hidden treasure, isn't it?!" I have to break into a laugh. What happened to them is just what happened to me. I can see why this is the new big thing in Italy. It's exquisite. It's powerful. I can't wait for the Live album now. Thank you for this, Julian Gargiulo.

Does a great job with masterpieces, and a fantastic job with new stuff
If you like piano at all, this is one for your shelf. He's not just good, he is a real artist. He does justice to the pieces that you know, and works wonders with stuff you haven't heard yet...buy it and restore the faith that good artists are coming along.

This CD includes some of the most beautiful classical piano pieces ever written. Julian Gargiulo's mastery of technique and style, while incorporating intense emotion into his pieces leaves the listener spellbound. He takes liberties in interpretation in a way that leaves one knowing the composers themselves would be impressed to hear their piece played with such passion. I have never heard Beethoven sound so dramatic! Julian's artistry in music is like no other. While I have many classical piano CD's by many of the great pianists, they all sound much the same as the other. Julian does not. He is in a class of his own.

Giovanni Turco
