ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
For his fifth birthday, John Lehmann-Haupt received a small nylon-string guitar, and with his father's help he was soon picking out songs by ear. The records he heard at home - of Segovia, Leadbelly, Josh White, Merle Travis, and others - exposed him early to the instrument's extraordinary range. By the age of thirteen, he had advanced sufficiently to put out a limited edition album of folk ballads and blues.

John's formal training came with his intensive study of harmony and analysis under Blanche Moyse at Vermont's Marlboro College, and in private lessons with guitarist Julio Prol in New York City. Master classes under Oscar Ghiglia and Angel Romero and private instruction in Schenker analysis also contributed to his education.

With a firm foundation in musical structure and his instrument's resources, John has built a distinctive repertoire of classical works and fluently voiced original song arrangements. From 1981 until 1993, he performed nightly at Windows on the World atop New York City's World Trade Center, an engagement cited for musical excellence by The New York Times. He has also performed in concerts and clubs throughout the Northeast, and in the homes of such prominent New Yorkers as Tom Brokaw, Madeleine Albright, and Donald Trump.

Of his 1978 record Unsung Guitar (Physical Records), featuring his popular arrangements, Guitar Player wrote: "John Lehmann-Haupt's aptitude is beautifully displayed on this disc." His classical performances appeared on the 1986 compilations Guitar Masters Volumes I and II (AIG Records.)

Since 1982, John has been on the teaching staff of New York's American Institute of Guitar. He has also written extensively on music and the guitar for The New York Times, Acoustic Guitar, Family Life, and several other magazines.

A Totally Delightful CD by a True Master of the Guitar
John Lehmann Haupt is truly a master of the guitar. The warmth and beauty of his guitar is so apparent from the very first song to the last. Bravo! I never wanted this CD to end. A total delight, brilliantly recorded and mastered by Bill Seigmund at Digital Island Studios in New York City. Being a broadcast engineer most of my life I was totally impressed by the warmth and natural sound on this recording. Bill please tell me which microphone you used for this CD. John's interpretation of the classics from Villa Lobos, Albeniz, and Terrega I enjoyed more than Segovia or even John Williams. John's technique is so perfect, totally non mechanical. Never for one moment does John's performance feel staged. It is always pure music from the heart. It flows with such grace and feeling. His arrangements of lyrical folk melodies are some of the most beautiful arrangements that I have heard for the guitar. Please send me the sheet music John. And one last important comment. Not only is John a fine guitarist, he is also a true gentlemen who loves to share his knowledge and love of the guitar with other fellow guitarist.
Thank you John. We need more people like you in this world. :)

A Little Tribute To An Old Friend
I had the privilige of playing drums in band John (and several other gifted musicians)belonged to, more decades ago than I care to recall. What I do recall clearly is John's amazing ability to emote through a guitar. What makes a player truly 'Great' is when he/she plays _every_note_, every little flourish, like they _really_ mean it. That describes John's playing to a tee. Speaking as a musician and as an old friend of John, I have nothing but the deepest respect and warmest personal regard for him. My memories of John are fond.
