Mountain, Sea and Sky

by Joanna Schwarz

“Mountain, Sea and Sky” is an upbeat melody with a soprano solo that soars over the elegant mix of piano, flute, bass, and drums - a sound that’s a touch classical, definitely folky and clearly inspired.

Album Notes
In writing "Mountain, Sea and Sky" (where the eagles fly), I had an image of the bald eagles that soar in the thermals - sometimes right above my house. I live in Squamish on the west coast of Canada. I'm surrounded by mountains which include the massive wall of the Chief and the stunning peak of Mt. Garibaldi.

I sat down one day at the piano and played with chords in a flowing triplet rhythm.  I could "see" the eagles circle and rise ever higher. I pictured the morning mood on the Squamish River as mist rises off the water and the sun breaks through. The cycle of life is written into the second verse. And of course, the eagles -- whose migration route takes them from Alaska to BC (British Columbia) -- have no boundaries.
In the winter of 1994 during the annual one-day count in the Squamish/Brackendale area, 3,769 bald eagles were counted.
