Album Notes
The story behind this fun little tune is that of a man seeking help to find love, he talks to a Gypsy palm reader, (Madam Ru), who tells him he needs "Love Potion #9" to solve his problem. She makes him up a batch, he drinks the potion, and it causes him to kiss "everything in sight", eventually including a cop on the street corner, who breaks his little bottle of "Love Potion #9".
The most famous versions of Love Potion #9 were the original version by "The Clovers" in 1959, later covered by "The Searchers" in 1963. The titles varied from "Love Potion No. 9" to "Love Potion Number Nine". There were several other cover versions as recent as 2009 by various artists, as well as parodies with various titles.
Most, if not all of the classic versions have the same "Pop/Rock & Roll" style arrangement. Joe Escobar's cover of this song takes a different, somewhat jazzy, cool approach, with a groove much like the song "Fever". The lyrics are timed and spread out in a different fashion and Joe opted for piano and organ in the rhythm section as opposed to the originals which had electric guitar. Add to that a big band like horn section and you have an entirely new version of this fun, classic song. Rumors have it that there is also the possibility that a new music video may be forthcoming from this recording.
