Album Notes
A beautiful montage of acoustic, finger-stlyed nylon string (classical) guitar and guitar/piano works by Guitarist/Multi-Instrumentalist Joe Euro.
Joe lives in Port Townsend, Washington, a beautiful and historic, "Victorian" seaport town, (one of only three in the United States!!!) where he records and performs his "neo-classical" guitar and piano/guitar works.
This is the long awaited follow up CD to Euro's critically acclaimed "The High Road", a much loved CD which has been featured on such public radio syndicated shows such as "echoes" on PRI, and "Hearts Of Space"..NPR.
Several tracks of "Eyes On The Horizon" have also been featured on John Dilberto's "echoes" syndicated radio program on PRI and made "echoes TOP 25 list. Euro was recently featured live on PRI's "West Coast Live" which was broadcast from the stage of the "Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival" in September'06, where Joe has been an annual featured performer for a number of years, most recently, this September of '08 as well!
"Eyes On The Horizon" features mostly nylon string, classical, Spanish, "finger style" guitar, but with some untraditional tunings such as CGDGAD and DADGAD, producing richly textured compositions. Euro launches several tracks on the piano, such as "Saratoga Passage" and "San Juan Islands Sojourn" which he also plays, then adds overdubs of tasteful nylon string guitar improvs and melodic lead solos.
He also plays bass and percussion on a few of the tracks to add to the multi-layered richness and complexity of sounds.
Euro has come to enjoy boating/cruising in and around the waters of the Pacific Northwest's San Juan Islands, as well in Canada's Gulf Islands, and Desolation Sound, and beyond. "Eyes On The Horizon" reflects, and was inspired by the nautical journeys Joe and his family and friends enjoy so much, and he has often been told that his music takes people on musical journies as well.
One piece in particular, titled: "Then They Were Gone" he's often been told, reminds some listeners of the whales, both for their beauty and majesty, as they surface, then disappear again below the dark waters, but also for the sadness in the fact that these creatures are endangered. This tune is played in a similar way to a track titled "Midnight Watch" from his "High Road" release, a hauntingly beautiful technique where Joe utilizes a huge, panned out "spacey" hall reverb on the basic guitar track, (although many people don't recognize this sound as a typical "classical" guitar...but it is!!!..and Joe often performs this, and/or variations of this piece in some of his live performances) then there is a sweet nylon string guitar overlayed on top of this track. Go to this track 5, "Then They Were Gone",..and have a listen? It really is a beautiful ambient style, meditative piece, and was featured often on "echoes" syndicated radio show on PRI, which also featured several other tracks from this CD, such as "Mystery Bay" and another somewhat ambient piece titled, "The Fogs Of August" played with a similar technique.
Other tracks such as "Underway" and the title track, "Eyes On The Horizon", are bright and uplifting, relecting the joy and excitement from untying the boat from a moorage, or pulling up the anchor and getting...underway!
"Nautical Miles" is a track dedicated to his youngest son, Miles, who was not yet born when Euro recorded his first CD, "The High Road" which featured his other three children's laughter on a track titled "Child's Play". Miles loves "driving the boat", and often falls asleep looking aft at the wake. There is a small photo of Miles, with Joe at the helm of the boat, on the inside cover. Miles is more in to airplanes now though...."Nautical Miles" features Euro's techniques of using "hammer-ons" and "pull-off's on the basic track, with nylon string lead solo, and percussion. Joe says this is his "rockin' out" tune.
Euro also plays a couple of famous and familiar pieces plucked from the classical repertoire such as Eric Satie's "Gymnopedie #1", and the familiar, and hauntingly beuatiful Spanish favorite, "Romanza". All tracks are available on CD Baby for a listen!!! and they are available on many digital download sites such as iTunes, Rhapsody...and many more!
Joe also enjoys cycling and kayaking.
He often rides his highbred mountain bike to his small wine shop, The Wine Seller, in Port Townsend, Washington, that he founded in 1982. One of his other passions..fine how Euro makes some of his living in this beautiful, historic, Victorian seaport town.
Another passion of Joe's is travel, especially to historic and fascinating destinations in Europe and beyond, where he has hosted small groups of 6-24 fellow travellers, generally twice a year!!! There is a link to his "Travel" page on the website (as well as on his other site
Joe recently returned (Spring 2017) from The Piedmont region of Italy and Venice, his 17th tour to host and/or guide.....a journey called "Wines Of The Adriatic" (Northern Italy/Slovenia, Croatia and tiny Montenegro) truly a "Remarkable and amazing Small Group Journey"!!! And Joe has been hosting Barge tours in France each Spring as well Fall tours of Italy and Sicily...
( FEBRUARY 12-24,2010 .."CHILE & ARGENTINA, from BUENOS AIRES,the "Paris of South America", to MENDOZA & SANTIAGO, for wines, great food, culture, architecture and history, the only non European journey Euro has hosted...check out the "Travel" Link on Joe's music site, or Go with Joe!
Joe Euro is keeping his "Eyes on the Horizon" for new and broader horizons...and always bringing a guitar along on these "small group journies" to occassionally serenade his fellow travellers with impromptu concerts!
Joe Euro has released his NEWEST CD titled "Souvenir"!! Which made "echoes" TOP 25 list 3 TIMES in 2008!!! instrumental feast for the ears featuring the guitar (some steel string guitar pieces as well as nylon string/classical guitars and piano/guitar compositions) Inspired by Joe's frequent and remarkable small group journeys that he has had the priveldge to "host"... and also to the incredible people Joe has known along his life's path!!! (After all..the word "souvenir" is borrowed from the French language, where it is the infinitive form of the verb: to remember)
