Album Notes
Joe Matzzie’s unique sound revolves around his gentle yet raspy vocals and melodic, acoustic guitar riffs. His songs have a folk foundation, but Matzzie enjoys dabbling in genres across the board. Defined, acoustic guitar-driven folk songs like “California Dreamin on Ya” and the harmony filled “It’s All True” exemplify Matzzie’s core sound and display his gifted songwriting ability.
- Music Connection

The album This Box Makes Noise is Joe Matzzie's third album of original songs, although the first two were released under the band name Joe Matzzie Beyond Belief. This Box Makes Noise represents Joe's return to songwriting after 13 years as a session musician, film composer and renaissance fair minstrel.

The album was fan-funded through a successful Kickstarter campaign in September of 2013. Most of the songs were written in the spring of 2013, although the song Houndstooth was completed during the Kickstarter campaign and Run To The Beach was written in October just before going into the studio to record.

This Box Makes Noise is a collaboration with producer Brian Packer. It features Nate Laguzza on drums and Adam Popick on bass. Michael Feinberg also adds upright bass on the song Dies Irae (Mozart Ranchero), a folkloric mashup of one the movements from Mozart's Requiem.

The basic tracks of drums, bass and guitar were recorder at KingSize Soundlabs in Los Angeles, CA (Studio A) using a vintage 32 channel Neve 8068 console.

The impetus for the album came after writing the song There'll be Hard Times in March of 2013, a song that was inspired by the fear and uncertainty of the economic turmoil that erupted in 2008 and continues to this day.
