Whiskey Jack Waltz

by Joe Sullivan Quintet

Lyrical melodies, exciting solos and a hard-swinging rhythm section combine to make this album one of jazz trumpeter Joe Sullivan's best yet - featuring Lorne Lofsky (gtr) André White (pno), Alec Walkington (bs) and Dave Laing (drs).

Album Notes
A few years back, I had the opportunity to play with Lorne Lofsky on a gig in Toronto organized by André White. I immediately resolved to find ways to get myself back into that situation as often as possible and to someday record with him in a small group setting. Lorne seems to understand my music so well - he digs deeply into the harmonies and melodies I've written and brings a level of lyricism and rhythmic sophistication that is inspiring to me. Pretty good sense of humour too!
Later on, I got the chance to play with him and the rest of those great TO guys in Kirk MacDonald's band, for which I will always be grateful to Kirk. This all led to some more concerts and recordings here in Montreal featuring Lorne with my Big Band and Sextet. It's all been a whole lot of fun and I'm crossing my fingers it'll go on a long time. And as for the rest of the gang - André, Alec and Dave - well they are about as good as a rhythm section gets, as everyone in Montreal has known for a long time. Big ears, great swing feel, inspired solos, the whole package. I've been spoiled playing with them all these years and intend to keep doing so as long as they'll let me.
I hope you enjoy listening to this album as much as I did in making it. For more information about my other recordings, my sextet and my Big Band, feel free to visit my website at You can also find me and the band on Facebook.
