ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
London-based early music ensemble, Joglaresa, directed by Carnegie Hall soloist Belinda Sykes, release 'Sing We Yule', their new album of medieval, folk, and contemporary song featuring guest soloist Dame Emma Kirkby.

The sixth studio work by the ensemble, the disc celebrates the group’s 25th anniversary and 25 years of Belinda’s career as one of Britain’s most imaginative performers of medieval song. Sykes’ critically acclaimed approach to early music includes a unique penchant for improvisation, which constantly re-draws the distinction between composer and performer.

Celebrated early music specialist Dame Emma Kirkby sings Orlando Gough’s musical adaptation of Blow Blow Thou Winter Wind, one of the songs from Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy, As You Like It.

“Having been brought up on folk music I like to hear medieval song performed with diversely characterful, natural voices. For this CD I celebrate three generations – from pioneer Emma Kirkby performing Orlando Gough’s Blow, Blow Thou Winter Wind, via my Arabic-nuanced Veni Emmanuel, to youngest emerging talent in folk and early music.” Belinda Sykes

Active since 1992, and always under Sykes’ direction, Joglaresa feature some of the most sought after musicians from the classical, jazz, folk, and early music worlds. Using their combined musical experiences, infused with Irish, English, Maghrebi, Balkan, and Middle Eastern in uences, the ensemble’s work focuses on connecting ancient and traditional music to create a new, homogenous sound.
The group is well known for its genre-defying interpretation of traditional repertoire, always aiming to boldly transcend the boundaries of what is thought of as “early music”.

“Joglaresa are at the forefront of singers and instrumentalists whose study of improvisation and ethnomusicology informs and shapes their imaginative re-creation of medieval music-making.”
