ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Having cut her songwriting teeth over the last six years with the experimental band Sticklips, singer/guitarist Johanna Warren strikes out on her own with her solo debut "Fates," a collection of nine darkly beautiful songs about loss, love, hope and despair. Inspired by the early recordings of Elliott Smith, Warren intended to capture honest, intimate impressions of her songs as she experiences them in her own head.

Recorded over the course three days in a spooky old attic in upstate New York, "Fates" was a deeply personal collaboration between Warren and engineer/co-producer Bella Blasko. The two women crafted lush ambient atmospheres with purely acoustic instruments, creating impressively rich sonic landscapes with remarkably sparse arrangements. Johanna’s ethereal vocals, accompanied by unconventional chord structures, intricate fingerpicking and forlorn woodwinds cast an eery spell that is at once hauntingly strange and timelessly beautiful.

So Beautiful!
I can't stop playing this cd or sharing it. The vocal , mixing and production all come together for a sound that takes you to another world that Johanna weaves with her emotion and amazing voice. The sounds remind me of "The Cranberries" and "The Sundays", but the choices of instruments in the production are so perfect and different and pleasing to the ear. I love all of the songs and recommend it very highly and looking forward to seeing a show someday.

Wow. Hairs standing on end!
The contrast of beautifully lyrical vocals and light instruments against such haunting themes makes Johanna's music uniquely emotive. If you don't get goosebumps, you might want to check for a pulse.

Delicious
Johanna reminds me of a female version of the infamous Steve Wilson (Porcupine Tree). Her musical gifts are composed of so much darkness wrapped in luminescent packaging and tied with blood red bows.
