ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
My personal notes on the CD:

"Described by Beethoven as the “Immortal God of Harmony” and praised by Berlioz saying “Bach is Bach as God is God” , or Max Regers” Bach is the beginning and end of all music”, meant that taking on the challenge to transcribe such a great known piece like the Goldberg Variation, which is considered as the most ambitious piece ever written for harpsichord, was a task that seemed impossible to many… even to myself..
However after lots of research and many experiments, I had managed, after a period of almost 18 months, to complete the edition that is presented here on this recording. It has been most exciting period researching the life, the explosive character, the work of this great man.

It made me realized numerous times, that its his uniqueness that rightly separates him from all his contemporaries and still grants him its unique throne in history of music. It is his ability to integrate the most dissonant and expressive harmonies into a very basic consonant background, creating stability and very extraordinary expressiveness that makes him the “Godfather of all music as we know it today”. I have always been fascinated and still am, that both as listener and performer, still today Bach music is considered most difficult music intellectually absorbed, most powerful music emotionally, and one of the hardest music to play and perform.

Being the largest of all clavier pieces published during the Baroque period, the work soars high above others in terms of its encyclopedic character. From this, it is often considered that it sums up the entire history of Baroque variation form. Being it a piece that is written both as showcase and originally for the harpsichord by using all the diverse styles of music to the day, but also showing off the exquisite techniques of the performer, made the piece most challenging to transcribe for three instruments with such vast gap of timbre in between.
It was also big challenging task to record the work, as the skills, responsibility and virtuosity of a single performer are now being divided into three. This had enforce us to some deliberate tempo differences in some variations when compared to the known piano recordings of this work, which has given a new dimension on the work both as expression and timbre.
The symmetrical structure is one of the main prevailing features in all the variations. Starting from the Aria, that is a Sarabande – a binary dance in slow movement , consisting of two equal parts of sixteen bars.
Even with each variation having its unique character with different time – signatures, the associated duration of the harmonic rhythm and other new melodic materials, the concept of symmetry is kept throughout the piece and reflects the overall shape of the work, as the thirty two pieces are grouped into two parts.
The second part begins with No.16, being a French Ouverture. This variations before it is a strategically placed cannon written in G minor, so that the musical impact of the ouverture is more effectively amplified as contrast, as if it is a new beginning.

When we look and examine how the pieces are arranged and placed in the work we notice that the Aria repeats at the end (da capo) and in between these outermost movements are thirty variations.
Typical for the piece is that all the variations, nine of which are strict canons are placed regular in every three pieces, starting with a canon in unison (Var. No.3) and the final canon in ninth (Var. No.27) Amongst other variations, there are Two-part Inventions, Fughetta, French Overture, Trio Sonata, and various dance pieces.
The last variation is not a canon in tenth, as might be expected, but an unusual piece entitled "Quodlibet". A quodlibet is a contrapuntal piece built upon several different melodies, and here we hear two folk tunes: "I long have been away from you, Come here, come here, come here" and "Cabbage and turnips have driven me away, Had my mother cooked meat, I'd have chosen to stay". They are traditionally understood to be Bach's humorous wit hinting at the return of the Aria to conclude the piece.

The main difference of my transcription from the original piece is the four additional bars which I have marked as 'optional ending', at the end of the "Aria da Capo". Knowing the fact that it does erupt the sympetry of the Aria and the work itself, the idea of such a different conclusion is that it evokes my desire to try and prolong the ending, even shortly, of such a monumental work. This does not in any way dispute the original Bach ending but on the contrary it is consciously written to reflect my enormous care and respect towards this great master."
