ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
John Butcher and Andy Moor have been collaborating on and off for almost 15 years now. Their first musical outing
was in the critically acclaimed trio Thermal with Thomas Lehn, released on Unsounds at the very beginning of the
label’s history. Since then Butcher and Moor have occasionally shared the stage, and even though they hail from very
different corners of improvised music, their sound has fused and their horizons have meshed into the duo that it is
now.
‘Experiments with a Leaf’ is a live recording from October 2013 in Berne, Switzerland. The duo was playing in a
cathedral with a large natural echo that somehow glues the two musicians together without the music resorting to a
wash of reverberated noise. On the contrary, the sound quality brings to light the playing and listening skills of both
players. The music is varied, takes unusual corners and moves along exciting avenues. There is no agenda or preplanned
aesthetic. Both musicians simply work with their wide and contrasting knowledge of sound and music, and
their fine responsiveness to each other. They make something that surprises themselves as much as the audience who
were present, never leaving one or the other behind.
This CD will be followed by a limited edition release on vinyl in April 2015.
