Album Notes
John Cable has been writing, singing and recording since the early days of Country Rock and Folk. As a member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in the seventies, he became the first US citizen to lecture at the Moscow Conservatory of Music on the history of American Blues and Rock.
John's approach has always had a traditional element, but in recent years, he has discovered a host of new sounds by listening to the likes of Wilco, The Shins, Grandaddy etc. Combining some interesting layers of sounds, such as guitar feedback washes and synthesizers to his old school approach to songwriting has created a fresh sound that brings out the best in his melodies.
John's lyrics are introspective and come from years of watching and listening to what's around him. You won't find any songs about beer and tight jeans here. This is folk music with a unique twist.

Pat Walsh

A beautiful offering from seasoned pro John Cable. Awash with tremolo guitars, Hammond B3s and the occasional slide, this CD manages to feel familiar and fresh at the same time. John finds a perfect match in producer Billy Gewin, who together with John cover most of the instruments themselves. This is the kind of record you can play again and again. It feels right. A mature, well crafted work. Highly recommended.

Familiar and Fresh With Every Listen
Broken Knife is one of those rare albums that feels both familiar and fresh with every listen. It's a deft weaving of the best "old school" sounds from Americana, folk rock and country with textures from modern music production that is his own sound. It's adventurous and playful, but the performances have that seemingly effortless ease that mature artists only achieve from decades of building their musical craft. Highly recommended!

It's about time!
I've been listening to John Cable for more years than either of us would care to remember (I think Gerald Ford was President). His (John's, not Gerald's) ability to craft great songs and sing them brilliantly remains undiminished. This is a pretty terrific album: beautifully played and sung and thoughtfully produced. I hope we won't have to wait quite as long for the sequel.
