John Dodge

by John Dodge

A set of a dozen great melodies which run the musical gamut of adult acoustic rock... from Triple-A to mellow ballads, from Americana to smooth jazz to alt folk. Wonderful lyrics and cool production, too. Rhythmic, melodic, catchy.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
John Dodge was an ATCO Records artist in the 80's with the Cooper Dodge Band and since has taken a long and interesting detour into the world of radio and records. But a dramatic series of events brought him back into the artist spotlight for this new CD simply titled "John Dodge."

A few years ago Richard Gates, John's best friend since childhood, was diagnosed with not one but two potentially fatal heart conditions. Richard is a stellar bass guitarist who works with Paula Cole, Suzanne Vega, Jonatha Brooke, Patty Larkin and others. But during the summer of 2003, Richard's heart condition quickly went from bad to worse. When it became apparent that Richard was in real danger of dying, he and John hatched "dream realization" plans to make this CD with Richard acting in the dual roles of bass player and producer. The record was made in a small, artist studio outside Boston. In addition to John's songs, vocals, and acoustic guitar, Richard's favorite studio musicians are on board: Duke Levine and John Curtis on guitars and Dave Mattacks on drums. The result was a wonderful sounding labor of love.

But wait, there's more. Two weeks after the CD was mastered, Richard took a real tailspin and wound up in Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. On close inspection, his doctor team recommended a heart transplant. One month later on March 26, 2004, Richard got his new heart and today is the fastest recuperating transplant recipient his doctors have ever seen. He gets stronger every day and is playing and producing again brighter and better than ever. He is so glad to be alive. And John is so glad to have him that way.

So that's the Truth behind this CD, baby. Now finally, here is the artist message from the back cover:

"I grew up listening to Josh White, Andres Segovia, Jimi Hendrix and Paul Simon. Before categories began to limit us, the Beatles would rock and croon and twang all on the same record....and we thought it was great. So that's what you're holding here-twelve tunes in a variety of moods all connected by a thread of love."

John Silliman Dodge, Seattle, February 10, 2004.

Blue Boat Upon the Water!
I was lucky enough to get an advance listen to John's eponymous titled album and I have to say that "Blue Boat Upon the Water" is IMHO one of THE beautiful ballads. It haunts me to this day. It's one of those songs that you find yourself humming without thinking about it. A true classic. Do yourself a favor and pick up this superbly crafted album of acoustic/electric pop ASAP.
