After being in a band (Concrete Blonde) for so long it's an entirely different experience to go out on a limb solo. Unlike my "Sketchbook" series, which are demos, experiments an odd tracks, this was a serious endeavor recorded at my cabin in Joshua Tree by my friend Brian Mansell of the Leon Russell Band. Brian (MediaLab) rolled his state-of-the-art mobile unit out to my little ranch and ran lines in to the cabin so I had the best of both worlds, I was at home and had a great studio. I'd been touring America for a couple years now solo on my Martin acoustic which is natural to me as I started playing guitar when I was a kid and wrote my first song when I was 12. I'd intended to just do a record that way, by Brian got a great sound out of my guitar and I'd be inspired to add a keyboard part here and there - I love the piano on "Lady Day", my tribute to Billie Holiday- and the viola parts on "Christmas Song". "Pastor Finch" is from a soundtrack I'm working on from a screenplay in progress called "Witch", a true story.
