Album Notes
John Friday is a singer/songwriter born in Washington, DC and now based in Florida. John takes his audience on a musical journey “down to the islands,” with a wide variety of rock, folk, country, reggae, Americana, and island styles. His soulful voice, wry wit and powerful live performances have steadily increased his national following.
Friday has shared the stage with major performers in Trop Rock, Americana, Folk, and Country. Highlights include shows with Will Kimbrough, Doyle Grisham, Nadirah Shakoor, Rob Peck, Thom Shepherd, Will Rambeaux, Danny Wells, Jim Morris, James “Sunny Jim” White, and Scott Kirby.
John covers popular songs from every decade of the pop and rock era. From the crooners of the 40s and rock ‘n’ roll of the 50s, from the British Invasion bands of the 60s to the singer-songwriters of the 70s, and from the “hair pop” of the 80s to the alt-rock legends of today, John plays the songs you know and love, as well as gems from the “ ‘B-side’ of the album” that will bring back memories of the era. John can tailor his show to any audience or venue.
More than just a cover artist, John Friday writes original music in several styles, “some funny, some serious, always entertaining.” His debut CD, Coastal Dreamin’ (released in 2009), features nine of John’s original songs and his signature style on four covers. His second CD, "Tropicalized," contains nine more originals and a touching rendition of Michael Smith's "The Dutchman."
John’s songs and performances earned a Top 5 finish in the Landshark Lager Battle of the Bands in 2009, including a live performance and video shoot in the prestigious 12th And Porter Theater in Nashville. John was the only solo artist, and the only Trop Rock artist, in the finals. His powerful songwriting has earned an Honorable mention in the American Songwriter Lyrics Contest.

Trop Rock is a blend of rock, country, folk, reggae, island-styles, and jazz, often with a strong steel drum influence. This crazy mixture is thrown in a blender with rum and tequila, and served in a coconut shell (with a little umbrella and a tropical fruit garnish)! Trop Rock evokes images of sailing, sunning, and a laid-back island atmosphere.
The job of the Tropical Balladeer is to take you on a musical journey “down-island,” where your cares melt away and life seems a little less stressful, a little less hectic, and a lot more sunny. The original trop rocker, and the creator of the genre, is Jimmy Buffett, so naturally “Margaritaville” is the first stop on this island journey. But there is much more to the Trop Rock universe, with styles ranging from “Gulf & Western” to “Rockalypso”, from “Salt Water Rock” to “Island Folk.” You never know what you might hear from a Trop Rocker, but you know it’s gonna make you feel good!
So climb aboard, adjust your sails, keep a firm hand on the helm, and let me take you on a musical sea cruise to the little latitudes. Don’t forget the rum!
