ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The John Howland Trio "Making Life into Music"

In a world that seems to grow increasingly toxic around us, The John Howland Trio are musical organic farmers. Their debut Sunburn is an album of catchy songs harvested up from the roots of real experiences and influences. It’s serious and playful. It’s big slide riffs and intimate acoustic sing-alongs. It’s simple and sophisticated. It just feels genuine. If light weight pop fluff is what you're after this is not your band!
In 2004 John Howland moved from Boston to San Francisco for a change of scene after his east coast jazz/fusion band dissolved. Disenchanted with relying on others, John set to writing new songs on guitar, and slide, with the intent to play them solo. After seeing Xavier Rudd perform at Michael Franti’s annual Power to the Peaceful festival, Weissenborn style lap steel was integrated as a vital part of the mix, as well as the inspiration to get ideas across in a uniquely personal way.
In 2005 old friend and band mate, Brad Harbidge, also decided to make the east/west trek and, with the addition of bay area native Bob Menacho on bass, the John Howland Trio was formed.
Sunburn was released in late 2006/early 2007 in the US and recently picked up for licensing and distribution for the territory of Japan by Greydog's Records. "Sunburn: Japanese Special Edition" will include 3 new tracks recorded with the LA/San Fran production team The Rondo Brothers who have worked with Galactic, Dan the Automator, and Jack Douglas (Aerosmith, The Who, John Lennon.
Live, the band has been described as “existing somewhere between a SoCal beach and an Allman Brothers show”, mixing great songs with an improvisational spirit. For three people, The John Howland Trio makes a big sound!

PRESS CLIPPINGS:

"Made for KFOG rootsy pop-rock"
Nate Seltenrich- East Bay Express

“this is pungently humid music that grooves.”
- Allaboutjazz.com

“expertly played songs that lodge themselves in your brain like splinters.”
- Jambands.com

“John Howland's new band elevates pop rock with rhythmic jazz/funk stylings. Howland's powerhouse songwriting and vocal delivery make this music eminently listenable and rewarding to hear live. The bass, drums and guitar are remarkably tight. I haven't heard a trio this strong in a long time.”
Christopher Waters- owner, Nomad Café

"Great original songwriting with shades of Ben Harper and John Butler Trio"
Andres De Channes- KRSH Radio 95.9 Sonoma County

"Nice Listen. Innovative and thoughtful music. This trio is beyond talented...and it shows!"

"Great CD, even better live. These are three young, super talented musicians that are way beyond there years in maturity and depth. Really worth following. Everything on this CD is magnified by their live shows. Keep an eye on this band."

Excellent debut disc - I'm glad my cd player has a "repeat" button!
I happened to catch John playing a solo set last night and was very impressed. He was "opening" for another band, and as far as I'm concerned he stole the show with his wholesome sound and original lyrics... Luckily, the entire Trio is coming to town next week - I can't wait. I just hope I don't burn straight through my disc in the meantime.
HIGHly recommended!
