________________________________________

Much love and sincere gratitude to everyone who performed, worked, composed, donated and supported this album. It is because of you that this dream of an album is now a reality. Special thanks to one person in particular: the love of my life, my best friend, my rock, my world, my reason, the mother to my son, the yin to my yang, my wife, Sarah. Thank you for always keeping me focused and always believing in me. I love you.

Circled around each child's journey through life and a personal reflection of my own past, this album is a concept album with each track representing either a memory or a person, place or thing I've always held close to my heart. These descriptions are not always what the composer intended or even close to the meaning of the composition. These descriptions are what these pieces mean to me and mine alone...

- Nature Boy - Not only is this jazz standard one of my all-time favorites but the lyrics and message are one that we should teach and spread as much as possible. A fitting introduction that I believe sums up the message of this album: "the greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return."
- Czardas - The relationship between siblings and the impact they have on life. For myself, this piece represents my one and only little sister, Katlin Maurer.
- Sonata in D, G.1 - Formal in character. Requirement in society. Restricted by rules. This piece, in four movements, represents school as a child (primary and secondary education).
- Someone to Watch Over Me - A parent, a guardian, a protector, a mentor. This is for my own father, John Maurer, Sr.
- Fantasie of Passage - The company of a loving and supportive community as a child travels through life. Friends, family, loved ones, teachers and colleagues.
- Rondo for Lifey - While Bernstein actually composed this piece for Judy Holliday’s Skye Terrier, I currently do not own a dog. I can, however, relate to owning a pet and the experience as well as joy growing up with one. Whether it be a dog, cat, bird or any other pet, this piece represents that feeling and enjoyment.
- In A Sentimental Mood - While I started learning the trumpet at the age of nine, I never really took it serious and started to really practice until I was at the age of fifteen. I always loved music but it wasn't until I heard Duke Ellington's, "In A Sentimental Mood" performed beautifully by a high school senior on trumpet, that I fell in love with the instrument. This piece for me then represents falling in love. Please note: at the end of the piece, there is a melody from another classic jazz standard quoted. This connects to February and the time around my son’s birthday. Can you guess the other melody?
- Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child - When I was eight years old, my mother passed away from cancer. Like everyone when a big dramatic event takes place, I looked for an outlet to shield my emotions. Luckily, my outlet was music. I listened to everything I could get my hands on. From Beethoven to Dizzy Gillespie, Led Zeppelin to Metallica, Tupac to Johnny Cash, I listened to everything! Then the following year, we were able to pick an instrument in the school band. I chose the trumpet. I cannot tell you why I exactly chose the trumpet. Perhaps the trumpet chose me. I will say, however, that I am a strong believer that everything in life, big or small, happens for a reason. The rest is history and here I am happily performing, traveling and teaching music for a living with the trumpet as my vessel. That all being said, this piece represents losing a loved one and coping with that loved one’s death. This track is for the memory of my mother, Therese Marie Maurer.
- "Vignettes", for trumpet and percussion - A child's hero. Written in a book, seen on the screen, drawn in a comic or a person in our daily lives that inspire good in us all. This piece represents that person, hero, superhero or story.
- A Mis Abuelos - Composed by one of my trumpet heroes, Arturo Sandoval, "A Mis Abuelos" translates to English, "To my grandparents" and simply represents that on this album: the love, support, flash and excitement a child receives from their grandparents. Every little boy or girl should be spoiled by their grandparents and I think that definitely comes across in this piece.

Dedicated to my firstborn son, Patrick Declan Maurer. No matter what happens in the day or night, no matter how stressful or hard I've worked, I come home, he smiles at me, and all that just simply goes away. I truly hope that after listening to this album that same feeling comes over you.

- JM
