ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
I began writing contemporary Christian songs in 1970, while serving as a volunteer musician in my Episcopal congregation. For a brief time, my musical partner Harriet and I were under contract with a local music producer who owned a studio in Houston, TX. We formed a musical duo, then small cover band, to make a living while recording in studio day sessions. It didn't take long for our relationship with that producer to sour; and we eventually had to buy our way out of the recording/publishing contracts. We continued to play in small club/restaurant venues around Houston; but I never gave further pursuit to publishing and recording the songs that I continued to write. As a homosexual, I knew enough about the Contemporary Christian Music scene to know that I would not be welcome there. Nor did I want to be a road musician, traveling the Prayer and Praise circuit for love offerings and hiding my homosexuality. I did continue to write mostly religious songs over the next 20 years of my spiritual journey. This album contains 49 of those songs. Seven of the songs cover the two years during which I left the Church to explore my sexuality as a gay man. The rest of the 49 were written while I was a member of either an Episcopal or a Lutheran congregation.

Now, after 40 plus years, I've decided to self-record and produce my own album as an Indie musician. It's been quite an experience to relearn these songs, many of which exist only as lyric sheets with chord symbols inserted above the words. To say that my chops were a bit rusty is an understatement! But my idea to finally release these songs has never been about my ability as a musician. Rather, my purpose is to share these songs that have had so much meaning for me, in the hope that they will find a place in the hearts of others. I also hope that someday the people who control the Contemporary Christian Music industry will welcome all of God's musicians, as unconditionally as the love of God welcomes them.

Thanks for listening.

JMc
