ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Welcome to my collection of fifty-three devotional chants and mantras, inspired by the Judeo-Christian and Buddhist traditions. These are short melodies that “came to” me at various times over a period of twenty years. They have been aids in my own meditation and prayer, and my intention is that they serve that purpose for you. Many of the chants may also useful in group worship.

The chants arose from and are wedded to their brief texts. A number are, to some extent, original with me; others you will find to be familiar from the Psalms and other scripture. And some are based upon well known Buddhist mantra texts.

I regard these recordings not as performances but as demonstrations of how to sing the chants. To most of them I added a simple accompaniment, often merely a drone. Accompaniment is certainly optional when you sing them. In fact, I usually sing them without accompaniment, and that is, of course, generally how they first came to me. On many occasions I merely speak the words.

When singing the chants you should choose a pitch range that is comfortable for you, generally in your low to medium voice register. Obviously much of the power of a chant or mantra comes from repetition. In most of the tracks I used repetition to a limited extent. I suggest that you experiment with what is comfortable for you.

The chants are organized according to their purpose in a meditation or prayer session. The initial chants, tracks 2 through 15, are intended for use at the beginning of a session, to help one in taking refuge and entering the presence of the divine. The theme of next group, tracks 16 through 29, is giving praise. Tracks 30 - 46 are helpful in evoking blessing and compassion; tracks 47 – 51 in seeking assistance and intercession; and tracks 52 – 54 in giving thanks.

The chants in this album are also notated in a collection of the same name. It is available at Amazon or through my web site. I find that the booklet is quite helpful in my own devotions, almost as a small hymn or prayer book. It also contains the accompaniments to those chants that lend themselves to group singing.

I sincerely hope that you find these chants and mantras to be helpful in your meditation and prayer.
