Los Angeles -When you think of the ‘90’s pop band Toad the Wet Sprocket, you probably wouldn’t associate them with loud electric guitars ladened with fuzz, wah-wah and slide. But when Todd Nichols (former singer & guitar player from Toad) met Johnny Hawthorn to produce Hawthorn’s debut CD, their two worlds collided. And something happened: catchy hooks combined with fiery guitar playing, resulting in one eccelectic and explosive CD.

The Johnny Hawthorn Band CD released January 28, 2006, features eleven songs with two classic covers of Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads” and Earl King’s “Come on,” with the former performed all on slide lapsteel guitar. Guests include Frank Zappa alum Arthur Barrow contributing Hammond B3 on a few tracks.

The Johnny Hawthorn Band CD has been called “a guitar picker’s dream,” as it includes electric & acoustic guitar, lapsteel guitar and mandolin. Hawthorn was featured in the July 2005 edition of Guitar Player Magazine in the Spotlight column and has product endorsements by Framus guitars/amps and Dana B. Goods Music Products. He also teaches at the world renowned National Guitar Workshop.

Originally from Philadelphia PA, Hawthorn came to Los Angeles to attend Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA, and upon graduation became a hired “gun” guitar player in the LA music scene. He has performed with and/or recorded for many artists including Toad the Wet Sprocket, Debby Holiday, Michael Duff, Shane Alexander, Nicole Gordon, and Grant Langston to name a few.

During a trip to New Orleans last summer, Hawthorn had a musical spiritual awakening. “The history of music is so strong there and I felt I couldn’t stand by and watch it go by as a sideman anymore. I wanted to be a part of that history!” Back in Los Angeles I put the call out to Todd Nichols to assist in the production. Within three weeks the CD was recorded, mixed and mastered. “Todd and I produced this CD all ‘in house’, without any outside help from record labels or and fancy recording studios.”

Blues Bytes magazine said, “Hawthorn is a fantastic guitarist in the Clapton/Hendrix vein…has a great way with a lyric…songs will remind you of Tom Petty with their classic rock sound, with occasional echoes of Stevie Ray Vaughan.”

The Johnny Hawthorn Band recently performed at the 2006 NAMM Show with guitar legend Dick Dale at the House of Blues in Anaheim, CA

Check this out!
Great songwriting- the songs vary in style and presentation from straight up blues rock to inspiring ballads. The vocals are original in delivery and have a classic warmth that wraps around intriguing guitar lines.

A Choir of Gems in this CD!
Funk-tastic music and vocals come together in this exciting banquet of musical treats, alternating from one flavor to the next. Like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to taste next. This has
got tasty morsels, sandwiched between a great band and hip vocals, ending with a tasty final flair for desert.

Under the hood you'll find some raunchy, gritty, honky tonk blues with spot-on rinky tinky keyboards. Less raw and more thoughtful are sassy Memphis-flavored licks sprinkled throughout the CD. If you like it slow, this CD will serve it up sexy and smoky. Real blues, with down on your luck lyrics sliding along a sashaying pace. It's delicious and intimate.

Its like a tour of everything that is fun about listening to blues and also playing them.

Mr. Hawthorn lays down just the right moment-appropriate sounds alternating with some freakin' amazing, guitar acrobats. As soon as you're focusing on the great vocals, up from the rear comes these incredible, funk-o-licious licks. Let it roll!

This is a great great toe-tappin', soul-shakin' delight for the senses. Get this CD!

in this time of fading guitar frontman bands, the johnny hawthorn band is a breath of fresh air. not only from his dead on vocal delivery, but the laser precise guitar work and artistic song structutes. bassist: steve heidtmann and drummer: mike sauer are always sitting in the pocket, ready to enhance and deliver back bone precussion when johnny pulls out all the stops.a great example is the rocking "shadow man".
the flexability of this trio is truly amazing from the funky "waldons pond", to the jazzy "still in love with you". the instrumental: "cream" will make any guitar freak drool....this is a must have cd. what perked my ears up the most was the lap steel guitar work on the tasty: "crossroads". (a song that has been covered a thousand times by many bands). johnnys lap steel slide work gives crossroads a fresh-new, foot tapping "feel good" vibe.
do yourself a favor...grab this cd.
