Album Notes
As a featured performer alongside the Minneapolis Symphony, an accompanist to the Moody Blues, and a special guest star on The Merv Griffin Show and Jerry Lewis Telethon, John Paris has enjoyed a diverse and varied career that has spanned four decades. Touring the country’s major cities, John entertained millions as the leader, composer and arranger of his show-band Atlantis, which was based out of Las Vegas. With this extensive resume and impressive credentials, John combines professionalism with real life experience. Having studied formal musical theory at Concordia College and the University of Nevada, John used this training to improve his practice while being tutored in the art by several well respected musical masters, including Dennis Sandoli, who taught jazz greats John Coltrane and the Brecker Brothers.
While jazz runs through his veins, John has managed to combine this passion with original new age music on his moving solo piano excursions, reminiscent of the improvisational style of Keith Jarrett, Liz Story and the beautiful melodies of Jim Brickman. His sound creates a fusion of these elements generating music that leaves the listener feeling spiritually uplifted, healed, relaxed, and rejuvenated. To quote the artist, “Music has always been a very special part of my life. It has been my healer, mentor, doorway to spiritual evolution and comforter. As an artist, I venture to bring you to a warm familiar place…like the feeling before a long awaited homecoming.” Come on in, listeners, sit by the fire, and unwind.

From MainlyPiano
"Inner Voyage" is pianist/composer John Paris’ third full-length CD, following his 2004 debut "Journey of the Soul" and last year’s "Reflections." A life-long musician whose career has spanned more than forty years, Paris has played the piano alongside some of the biggest names in show business. He entertained millions of people all over the country as the leader, composer and arranger of his show band, Atlantis, which was based out of Las Vegas. Combining his vast professional experience with his training in jazz and classical music, Paris’ original compositions are a fusion of jazz and new age styles intended to leave the listener feeling spiritually uplifted, healed, relaxed, and rejuvenated. Paris comments, “Music has always been a very special part of my life. It has been my healer, mentor, doorway to spiritual evolution and comforter. As an artist, I venture to bring you to a warm familiar place…like the feeling before a long awaited homecoming.” The fifteen tracks on "Inner Voyage" were mastered by Joe Bongiorno at Piano Haven Studio, assuring that the piano sound is warm, clear, and smooth.

"Inner Voyage" begins with “Golden Heart,” a beautifully-flowing ballad that spills over with love and tenderness. “A Minor Musings” has a more improvised feel with a tinge of mystery. Dark and dramatic, I really like this one! “Lila Grace” is a delicate love song that could have been composed for a child - also a favorite. “Surprise in the Forest” is light and playful, making me wonder just what the surprise was - great musical storytelling! “Golden Coins” is a breezy improvisation that I find very relaxing in a jazzy and upbeat sort of way. “Welcome” is lyrical, elegant, and a bit moody - I like this one a lot! “The Clock” is a really interesting concept piece with a steady, repetitive rhythm that seems to be the movement of time while the melody dances all over the piano - as life tends to do. “Wonderment” conveys the dreamy magic as well as the excitement of that pure, innocent awe that happens spontaneously and unexpectedly and leaves a person feeling tingles.

"Inner Voyage" is an excellent choice for listeners who like jazz mixed with their new age piano. The music is complex enough to reveal new things with each listen, but is also very accessible for those who prefer their piano music in the background. Check it out!

Revview excerpt from Music and Media Focus
John Paris’ “Inner Voyage” CD opens with a track entitled “Golden Heart. For me, the word that comes to mind in hearing the song’s intro is “elegant.” As it unfolds it reaches deep into the heart and resonates with John’s profound regard for the special people who have touched his life, and to whom this piece is dedicated. The album’s title track has an improvisational feel and traverses a number of moods and motifs, reflecting various influences in John’s playing. It is obvious that family is very important to John and he describes a track called “Beautiful Son” as being “written for my new grandson, Michael Anthony, who had a very difficult entrance into this life.” The song is tender and warmhearted with a sentimental presence that I found quite moving. A similar ambience pervades the album’s final track entitled “Wonderment.” The melody leaves the listener with a warm glow and is a wonderful way to bring the album to a graceful conclusion.

One thing that impresses me about John’s playing is its diversity and the way he is able to start off in a jazzy mode, as he does on “A Minor Musings,” and then weave in other elements, yet have it all sound perfectly integrated. Each of the 15 pieces on the album is unique and reveal yet another layer of this experienced performer. Behind the music I hear echoes of John’s many years and experiences in the music world - from playing classical music, to being in a large Las Vegas show band, to his more intimate moments as a soloist on the grand piano. John Paris is a consummate professional who is as equally at home with a classical composition, a jazz tune, or an improvised flight of fantasy. He is truly blessed with a musical gift and a sincere desire to share it with the world.
