ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Imagine a few guys on a hot summer night, sitting on a back porch somewhere in, say, rural Louisiana. They’re jamming some tunes, passing a jug, and having a good old time.
“Bring Me Some Whiskey”, a new single written and performed by Vancouver’s JOHN PIPPUS was artfully recorded at AXIS MUSIC PRODUCTIONS with this picture in mind. On the B side you’ll find their take on Robert Johnson’s classic “Stop Breaking Down”.

Bring Me Some Whiskey 3:15
Stop Breaking Down 3:47

John Pippus - Vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica
Michael Schau - Electric guitar, bass, percussion, and drum programming

Side A: “Bring Me Some Whiskey”

The riff for this song was inspired from watching Keith Richards being interviewed by Guitar World Magazine. He was explaining how his famous G tuning works.
One guitar lick caught my ears and I ran with it, adding some lyrics to fit the groove.

Words and music: John Pippus

Bring Me Some Whiskey

Bring me some whiskey
Any kind will do (2x)
If you’re down on the bottom
You can join me too

How long, how long
Must I love you (2x)
Tell all my children
I’ll be coming home soon

My mama tell me
She’s nervous too (2x)
But I won’t let her down
I’m gonna quit this drinking that I do

Pretty soon…

Side B: “Stop Breaking Down”

In 1937, Robert Johnson travelled to Dallas and recorded a number of songs, most in two takes. Eleven songs were released the following year, including “Stop Breaking Down”.

I found a swampy blues groove and although it bears no similarity to the Johnson classic, for some reason I looked up the words, and found they fit with the pattern I had. So that’s how this “cover” version came to be.

Words: Robert Johnson (public domain)
Music: John Pippus

Stop Breakin’ Down

Every time I’m walking, down the street
Some pretty mama start breaking down with me
Stop breaking down, yes stop breaking down
The stuff I got’ll bust your brains out, baby
It’ll make you lose your mind

I can’t walk the streets, to consolate my mind
Some no-good woman she starts breaking down
Stop breaking down, please stop breaking down
The stuff I got’ll bust your brains out, baby
It’ll make you lose your mind

Now, you Saturday night women, you love to ape and clown
You won’t do nothing but tear my good reputation down
Stop breaking down, please stop breaking down
The stuff I got’ll bust your brains out, baby
It’ll make you lose your mind

I gave my woman, the ninety-nine degree
She jumped up and throwed a pistol down on me
Stop breaking down, please stop breaking down
Stuff I got’ll bust your brains out, baby
It’ll make you lose your mind

I can’t start walking down the streets
But some pretty mama don’t start breaking down with me
Stop breaking down, yeah stop breaking down
The stuff I got’ll bust your brains out, baby
It’ll make you lose your mind
