Album Notes
John Townsend

Since John's voice and music first appeared on the airwaves a few years back, his stamp has been on a wide range of successful recordings spanning three decades. At last count he has performed as either a vocalist, writer or player on over 40 gold and platinum albums worldwide. His musical successes started in his college years and have continued to the present. His college band, The Rubber band had a chart record with "Let Love Come Between Us" for Columbia Records. Since coming to Los Angeles in the late 60's he's added to his resume with hits like "Friends" by the group Feather, but probably his most noted effort is "Smoke From A Distant Fire" with the Sanford/Townsend Band. John has penned songs with other artists of legendary status like Kenny Loggins, Gregg Allman and Larry Carlton, to name a few. Through the years he has also been the vocalist on many prominent national commercials and has had a number of his songs selected for major motion pictures.
John has brought all his artistry and experience to the table with his friend for 25 years, recording engineer/producer Alex Kazanegras. Alex has has been involved with many successful records over the years. We can't list them all, so for now we'll just mention Loggins and Messina, Weather Report, Sly and The Family Stone and Janis Joplin. 'Nuff said. Together John and Alex have created an extraordinary album, that by John's own admission, is the best thing he's ever done. The CD is entitled "The Road Leads Home" was released January 20th, 2003. Saw him live...then got the album!!! Great stuff...
I walk in to KULAK'S WOODSHED IN North Hollywood. I hear the guy sing some great tunes, then I buy the album and thoroughly enjoyed it. I love to be able to hear a song and then get the album and have it still kick ass!!!
I still call them albums...sorry!!!!

Southern rock and roll has been blessed with great, expressive singers such as Gregg Allman, Rodney Justo (of the Candymen and the first Atlanta Rhythm Section's album), and Jimmy Hall of Wet Willie. Johnny Townsend is at the top of that heap.

The first and only time I heard Johnny Townsend sing live was at a local YMCA dance in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He sang "Kansas City" and set the standard by which I judged the voluminous and labyrinthine varieties of Southern vocals that I explored for the rest of my life. I knew then I would never hear better and God knows I have tried to find it. My brain was tattooed by his music. Do not miss listening to Johnny Townsend!

You can buy all of Townsend's work (the first Sanford-Townsend Band album is a masterpiece) just for his singing. but in addition to having a voice that defines his genre; his songwriting and, in particular his lyrics, follow up closely behind in quality. They define the sense of place that all Southern artists seek to express and Johnny nails the genre to the wall. Southern music does not get any better than Johnny Townsend.

God gave Johnny his voice and he added his own contributions to yield a fine Southern artist that anyone who claims to have any taste as an expert must immerse ones self in. This may be a total immersion baptism for some. Dive in and enjoy the swim.

Great CD. A must have. Good to hear John back again.
I have been a fan of Sanford Townsend band forever and this new CD by John is Great. Everthing is typical of his work. Lyrics and arrangement are top shelf and this is a must have for anyone who appreciates the easy layed back style of artists like James Taylor. Thanks for a great addition to my CD collection.

A Masterpiece! Well worth the wait!
From the hope and determination of The Road Leads Home to the pain and regret of Best Man, John covers all the bases. Every track on this disc is strong and stands on its own. What more can you ask for on a music CD - Songwriting, Musicianship and Vocals. This disc has all 3 in spades! Welcome back John! Give us more soon!

Great to be back..............
Long overdue, one of the great singer/songwriters of my generation. I disagree on the "if you like Robert Palmer and Don Henley" quote you have to sell it. If it sounds like anything I would say its Little Feat and Delbert McClinton. However, I hate comparisons, SO this is a strong, unique and very welcomed CD from John Townsend.
Congratulations !!

Being a North Alabama native myself, the fact that John Townsend has recorded in Muscle Shoals instantly peaked my interest. I got the CD and have enjoyed every minute of it.

Get it and you'll see why!
