Album Notes
Phoenicia is delighted to announce the release of this recording of new piano music by Jon Appleton, performed by the exciting and expressive Japanese-American pianist Yoshiko Kline.

1. The Purcell Variations
2. Julia
3. Suite des Hommages
4. Nine Novelettes

Based on Henry Purcell's 17xx composition, Queen Mary's Air, the Purcell Variations is a neoclassic composition following in the same tradition as Appleton's Scarlatti Doubles and Couperin Doubles.

Julia, written in memory of the Russian pianist Galina Turkina for her sister, Julia, is a neo-romantic suite, both elegeic and celebratory, filled with lyrical and haunting melodies.

The Suite des Hommages is a set of six pieces written in honor of composers Jon Appleton has always admired: Moszkowski, Korngold, de Falla, Prokofiev, Grieg, Suk and Satie.

Finally, the neo-romantic Nine Novelettes, both lyrical and virtuosic, evoke particular places and emotions, ending with the astounding and delightful "Playing with Chopin," an Appleton-signature variation on a little-known Chopin waltz.

Jon Appleton was born in Los Angeles, California and currently lives in Princeville, Kauai, Hawaii. His other neo-classic music, The Scarlatti Doubles/The Couperin Doubles, and neo-romantic music, Jon Appleton: The Russian Music have been released previously by Phoenicia Publishing.

Yoshiko Kline performs as recitalist, soloist, and chamber musician throughout Japan and New England. Since her debut concert, in Tokyo, she has appeared in Boston’s Jordan Hall, Museum of Fine Arts, and Gardner Museum; as well as The Tanglewood Music Festival, The New York Keyboard Festival and Aspen Music Festival. Performances have also been broadcast live from the studios of Boston radio stations WGBH & WMNB and Aspen, CO Radio KAJX. In addition to her classical interests, she excels as contemporary artist performing and premiering new works for numerous emerging composers, artists and ensembles.

She is currently a faculty member at Winchester Community Music School, The Winsor School and Rivers School Conservatory while continuing an extensive private piano studio. Yoshiko received her BM at Toho-Gakuen Conservatory of Music and MM, with honors, at New England Conservatory of Music. Principal teachers have included Gabriel Chodos, Yoriko Takahashi and Tamiko Ishimoto.
