ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Hamburg, 1735 Georg Phliipp Telemann publishes 12 Fantasies for unaccompanied Viola da Gamba. Thought lost for forever they suddenly reappear in 2014 in a castle in Germany.
This is some of Telemann's finest music. He writes idiomatically for the viol, and uses all the different national styles as well as baroque and preclassical influences. A wealth of variety daring and beautiful harmonies and a profound and intimate knowledge of the instrument.
Recorded in Paris in April 2016 on a French viol by Salomon, built in Paris in 1741. The instrument is perfect for the repertoire.
This is Volume 1 of two volumes.

Telemann Fantasies for solo viola da gamba Vol.1
This music, as stated, was only discovered in 2014 and shows yet another dimension to this multi faceted composer. Over the years since I first heard Telemann's music I've always admired it and have never understood the dislike some people have for his out put. These Fantasies are not like the overtures etc so familiar to us but in, for me, inhabit a different plane altogether. They aren't Bach but they are wonderful music, in my view masterpieces and I look forward to rest of the set. I am not a musician and can't even tell when a piece is flat, sharp or nothing at all (though I can sense the minor keys) but the recording and love that has gone into this recital is very evident. I find the solo gamba best late at night and a wonderfully soothing accompaniment to meditation and mental healing from stressful days. These are not like the Bach suites but I find them a very welcome insight into another, unknown aspect of Telemann's output . I can't compare them to other versions as I don't have other versions. A cd set on Coviello has been released which I have ordered is till on the way from the UK and I look forward to its arrival any day now. The recording is very immediate and up front. Some may find it a bit aggressive, I don't. For me it enhances immediacy. So far I've played it five times and will air it again tonight. The music is a treasure and for any devotee of the German baroque is essential listening. Jonathan Dunford plays a beautiful full voiced instrument which is a joy to hear. Looking forward to Vol.2
