ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Who is Jean Baptiste Cappus?

Firstly a native of Dijon and a master violist as well as violinist, and a reputed conductor who wrote and directed many operas, with the illustrious RAMEAU as the harpsichordist in his orchestra.
He was born in Dijon the 6th of October 1689 to François Cappus also a musician and composer.
He probably studied with Marais and published two books of viol music.
In Dijon he held the job of being the Duke Of Burgundy's musician, as well as for the "Académie de Musique" founded by Rameau's brother Claude. His functions there included being a violinist, composer and orchestra conductor.
He died in Dijon in 1751.

Many of his works have been lost. This includes operas, a Te Deum, various vocal music and two books of viol music.
Only one of these books has survived the "Pièces de Viole" from 1730.
This is therefore the first complete recording of Cappus' works for the viol, volume 2.
Recorded in Paris on a Salomon 1741 viol.
Accompanied by Jérôme Chaboseau on the continuo viol and Pierre Trocellier on the harpsichord.

Recorded and edited for Astres Records by Jonathan DUNFORD. Mastering by Jérôme CHABOSEAU.
