Album Notes
In most of my songs (that have lyrics) I switch duties between lyrics and music - the harmony tells the story which takes us on a journey; the lyrics set the mood. YATRFE is no exception. We start at one point and hopefully, by the end, we're asking, "How did we end up here?!?" And so, we listen once (or twice) more.

So, what's the story? The story is actually a personal scrapbook of my travels up the California Coast. It's a super specific vision, but it holds much of the magic I experienced driving between San Diego and Arcata. The lyrics happened all at once and really speak about a very personal experience.

This is the nutshell...

Cali Based Jonathan Townes Releases Inventive New Single "You Are The Reason For
Cali based and Berklee College of Music alum Jonathan Townes has released his intriguing, brand new single titled "You Are The Reason For Everything". One listen from the first few notes of the tune, and you're instantaneously hooked as it has some subtle, groove laden hooks that reel you in unsuspectingly, and drives the musical progression even further as the song travels along. I was literally floored from the first moment I heard the song, and you really see the musical evolution that Jonathan has made from where he was prior, and seeing the roadmap that he has taken in his musical travels thus far that has been nothing short of spectacular and breathtaking. Jonathan was featured on the site last June, and I remarked at how he was making the most of what he learned from Berklee right here in Boston, and was using that education to his best advantage and has blossomed into a full fledged talent with nothing to hide, and all his emotions left out in the open for the listener to make sense of. A spectacular track that is most certainly required listening.

Neu Futur Review
Jonathan Townes is an American multi-instrumentalist, audio-engineer and gifted rock musician. He attended the Berklee College of Music, and later came out with his first professional release titled, “Glossolalia.” Moving to NYC, Jonathan started playing gigs and working as a recording engineer. Since, he has produced nine projects for his Giglaeoplexis record label. Jonathan’s song “You Are the Reason for Everything,” will introduce you to his expertly crafted sound, having you fall in love with his music.

The song begins with a crackling, distorted guitar that gradually builds into the base of a soundscape. It is built upon with the addition of acoustic guitar creating moments of unique dissonance and tension before the instrumental arrangement breaks into a fuller sound with hints of electronic production combined with percussion and bass. The soundscape progresses with the addition of a string section creating a captivating, cinematic sound. The first half of this seven-and-a-half-minute composition does well to capture the feeling Jonathan has for the US West Coast and trigger those emotions in listeners.

Seamlessly, the instrumental transitions into a softer more somber piano fronted arrangement with light hints of percussion. The song then becomes a duet between piano and vocals as Jonathan enters singing, “I can’t recall/Just what I need/But when we fall/I see what you mean to me/About all the days/Those places we dream/You are my life/The reason for everything,” showing off his emotional timbre. Split into three separate vocal sections divided by riveting instrumentals that will leave listeners in awe, “You Are the Reason for Everything” will keep you entertained from beginning to end.

Jonathan Townes is an innovative musician with a distinct sound that musicians will rave over. “You Are the Reason for Everything” is just one example of his passionate work.

Neu Futur Review
On You Are the Reason for Everything, Jonathan Townes is able to tell a tremendous story. The effort is something that listeners will have to strap a pair of headphones on to get the song’s full effect, as there are so many things going on during any second of the single that one’s full attention is needed. The different sounds, approaches, and movements that occcur over this song’s run time make for a complete and complex set of interactions. The track itself can be enjoyed on its surface, but hearing how the percussion and synths interact tells one a complete story. There is no need for vocals on You Are the Reason for Everything; Townes’ output here tells a vibrant story without the utterance of a single syllable. When Townes does begin to lay down his sultry and emotionally intense vocals, the track is able to be given a considerable jolt to its momentum that will keep fans on the edges of their seats.

The track is musically distinct from any one genre. There are nods here to traditional electronic music, ambient, industrial, and even new age and classical genres. This wholly unique composition will stand up to repeat plays as fans continue to find new notes, dynamics, and sounds that were previously obfuscated during a prior listen. We’re a big fan of how the song continues to evolve as listeners continue on; the more alternative / 1970s rock sound that dominates during the cut’s final few minutes is truly a sight to behold. Hints of progressive rock and even metal can be heard here, with fans ending this single just as strongly as they did when they first began to play You Are the Reason for Everything.
