ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Best known for his stellar guitar work with Steely Dan on tour in 2000, Jon Herington here shows us the complete package of singer, songwriter, and, of course, guitarist extraordinaire in this debut album of 13 strong pop-rock (think Beatles, Stones, etc.)

The new CD from Jon Herington is called "Like So". It features Jon the guitarist, of course, but the big surprises here are Jon's singing, the songwriting, and the sound of a band that recalls the good old days of 60's rock yet manages to sound fresh and varied in its support of each of these 13 great new songs.

The songs tackle a wide range of topics, from the endearing, dysfunctional romance of "Rolling With the Punches" to the bittersweet tongue-in-cheek desperation of "Lie to Me"; from the poetic declaration of love of "Like So" to the twisted seduction of incest in "Like Your Sister"; from the arrogance of success in "Fauntleroy" to the gospel-leaning simple and solid gratefulness of "Only You Can Take Me There"; and from the sarcastic tale of experience ("Been There") to the innocence and hope in a father's love ("Beautiful Girl").

Dubbed "the most valuable sideman in the so-called Steely Dan Orchestra 2000" (John Soeder-Cleveland Plain Dealer), Jon is " Steely Dan's New Guitar Guy " -- arguably one of the most coveted slots in the annals of popular music. And also, potentially, one of the most intimidating; few musical roles receive the same amount of examination, discussion, and debate as does this one. But Jon is handling it all with "perfection and grace", turning out work which, to our minds, often evokes the melodic and rhythmic heart of cherished recorded versions while simultaneously displaying his own original and powerful musicality.

What did the critics have to say?

"Quicksilver guitarist Jon Herington picked, scratched and poked his way to standing ovations in the encore on fan favorite 'My Old School'" (Austin Scaggs-Rolling Stone).

"...needle-sharp lead guitar by Jon Herington" (Washington Post)

"Herington ...was nothing short of sensational" (David Sinclair-London Times).

Guitar Player Magazine called Jon a player with "one formidable voice" and "chops of doom".

Check him out here where he shows us the complete picture of singer, songwriter, and, of course, guitarist extraordinaire, in this debut album of 13 strong original pop-rock lyrical and musical excursions.

Great stuff
Why only two albums from Jon Herington, one an import, in all these years? I heard Jon play recently at a Steely Dan concert in LA and was knocked out. Hadn't been aware of him before but based on the Dan concert I bought this album. Totally love it and I would go and hear him play anytime, with or sans the Dan.

Not what i expected!
Being a full on Dan fan I saw Jon on tour last year, when I first heard this i didn't expect
the style to be so different.
Jon has a great voice and an excellent
writing style, combine this with his superb guitar playing completes the package. I was won over from track one to the end. Great album, highly recommended.

The sound of gorgeous guitars...and melodic hooks.
I like Jon Herington's sound. If you have heard his playing on the Steely Dan tour, you know his oozing musicality and guitar wonderchops. This album has him in a different surrounding, and probably more true to his Beatle, James Gang, Tom Petty - influences. I can hear all kinds of homages to some of my favorite songwriters. The guitar work here has a tangy sheen to it that says less about studio processing and more about his good taste. An album that deserves (and rewards) many replays.

A great exhibition of Jon's songwriting and playing
Jon Herington's "Like So" is an excellent set of songs, all very beautifully crafted. Jon's voice is also very good and those who saw him with Steely Dan (and didn't hear him sing) will be pleasantly surprised. Some highlights of this disc - "Rollin' With The Punches" - a fabulous rock and roll tune in the classic tradition - energetic, melodic, well written and just plain cool, the very melodic "Lie to Me" and "Like So" are truly beautiful pop songs, "Beautiful Girl" is a first rate ballad with some amazing acoustic playing by Jon highlighted by some passionate vocals (his best singing on the disc, in my opinion), "Like Your Sister" is a soulful blues-rock song with a great hook. There really isn't a bad cut here. I don't love every song here but for the most part, it succeeds on every level. Jon's playing is great all the way through. He is a very talented guitar player. I enjoyed this from beginning to end.

Good stuff
Excellent stuff, totally different from his work with Steely Dan, but still totally creative and enjoyable. As another reviewer said, it gets better each time, because there are so many layers that take time to waft their way into a your ears, so give it time, play it many times, but most of all, BUY IT and support this excellent and talented artist!!!

Better with each listen
The songs come first here. The arrangements, at times understated, always support the vocals. Intelligible and intelligent lyrics. At times you forget that Jon is a world class guitarist but you are never far from another great solo. I truly enjoy "Like So" more with each listen and look forward to Jon's next release.

Great guitars, great songs.
Fabulous Steely Dan Guitarist Jon Herington presents his first solo album.
Like So starts with Rolling with Punches . It’s a superb rock song with outstanding guitar arrangements. Jon sings also very good.
Lie to me is another fine melodic rock track. I like jon’s guitar sound so much.
Another outstanding track is Valentines Day, a heavy Tom Petty styled rock.
Turn Time Around is a wonderful ballad with very good acoustic guitars and great organ sound.
Roots Rock at his best is Dry your eyes. The guitars do their best. The sound is fantastic. Oh what a groove.
Like so is a very good rock album with superb guitars.
It’s a must have for every fan of good rock and roots music in the world.

Highly recommended!
As a Steely Dan fan, I've been enjoying Jon Herington's live playing with them for a few years now. They have one of the best bands around and he's definitely the star player. So, I finally decided to check out his own music. Not every song is a classic, but the exceptionally good songs really stand out. The title track, Sunday and Like Your Sister are my favorites, but there isn't a bad song on here. This CD is in heavy rotation at my house, and I've been recommending it to my music friends!

Another Side of Jon Herington
I must admit, I'm a little bit biased when it comes to Jon Herington. I mean, the man can PLAY. So when I first heard this CD I was surprised; by that I mean that I was expecting something entirely different. As I continued to listen I discovered that I REALLY LIKE this CD.. I have since realized that Jon is not just an excellent guitar player: that he is, no doubt. But I am here to tell you that there is Much more to the man than that. So give this CD a few plays- it gets better each time you hear it... and I think you will end up agreeing with me that this CD is great and serves as an an excellent example of Jon's creativity and flexibility as a musician and a song writer. By no means is he simply Steely Dan's new guitar player.
