Album Notes
"Once You Get your Chops..." as a title was inspired by a comment used by my father when referring to perfecting and ensuring continued refinement of one's craft. Each song represents a place or time that I found inspiring in my travels among the islands and the west coast of BC. All of my songs encapsulate relationships and the way they influence emotions. Lyrically I like to use my imagination to convey underlying meaning that remains open to a broad brush of interpretation. A number of songs are collaborative musically with west coast musician and songwriter Paul Marcano and were all recorded at his Visual Breakfast Studios on Salt Spring Island, BC. As a first album this Indie release was created over a period of two years and reflects a welcome return to my island and family roots. Enjoy.

Up and coming Canadian songwriter first effort XLNT!
Ok, so I am biased towards songs with melody message and massage, Once You Get Your Chops by Josh Clarke is a fine first effort release for an indie artist. His deep sense of relations with the people and world around him is refreshingly well illustrated in his unique lyrical and poetic way. It is much appreciated that he sounds so authetically genuine in his self-expression of how he feels about things. His song Part of Me is an intense rockin' revelation of what everyone goes through "in transition" to the next phase in a life. I love Rosie Bay and the pure ease at which he lulls you into the environment of location and insights into his heartfelt feelings about a particular relationship. His observational powers and deep sentiments are a quiet simmer in his song Heart. For Two for You, if it is ever discovered by the mainstream recording industry is certainly going to make that company a lot of money, it a natural original love song with nothing contrived. The title cut Once You Get Your Chops is the launchpad to Josh's musical career because this song encapsulates who he is and his obvious respect for down to Earth wisdom of the ages. All Josh's songs are accessible and a pleasant reminder that good songwriting is still out there revealing an honest and open self-expression of the composer! Finally I have to say what others have noted and that is that Josh Clarke has a great rich and texturally distinct voice and it's a pleasure to listen to this album over and over again, it definitely has some of that laid back JJ Cale nuance to it but rocks on too!. Five stars for sure!
