Rock and Stroll

by The Old Man and the Muses

Mostly raw, unpolished, moderate rock. The 1st and 2nd Tracks are instrumental ( and incremental in intensity ). Track 3 is the epitome of my musical attempts and, along with most of the remaining tunes, has a somewhat 1970's sound and/or feel to it.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Thanx for takin' the time to check-out these tunes ! The Old Man and The Muses is a One-Man Flim-Flam Band. Most of the songs were recorded in a professional studio with me simply singin' and playin' an acoustic guitar. I used the same guitar, a keyboard, and an indispensable home studio recording computer program to add effects, strings, drums, et cetera.
I hope, in whatever way possible, my attempts bring you some enjoyment; lighten a dark mood, soften a hard heart, and/or tickle a few fancies. Thanx Again : )

Rock and stroll ( Lyrics + Songologies )

Rock 'n' Roll forgot ( Track 3 )

An empty room
An empty chair
But I'm the one
Who's sitting there
just sitting there
See my reflection
On the wall
But there's no mirror
There's just nothing at all
no, oh
Not a sound
Not a word
'cause I'm the one
who'll never be heard
no, never be heard, yeah

Chorus :

'cause I'm, I'm the one
who Rock and Roll forgot
Hmmm, Mmm
Rock and Roll forgot
Hmmm, Mmm

A dusty room
filled with, with broken strings
A lonely hall
where no one will ever sing
The mem'ries last
forever before
The moment's past
worth nothing worth waiting for more
Not a word
Not a sound
'cause I'm the one
who'll never be found
no, never be found

Chorus

Break

Chorus

Can you feel the mem'ries ( creepin' up on you ) ? ( Track 4 )

Can you feel the mem'ries creepin' up on you ?
Can you see the good times through the black and the blue ?
Only time will tell you if your love is true
So can you feel the mem'ries creepin' up on you ?

Never feel the laughter Never fear the rain
Forever and for after you just fear the pain
Easy to remember Harder to forget
But it's nothin' that you need if it hasn't gotten to you yet

Repeat first four verses

Could Be ( Track 5 )

Could it be I've been waitin' for the wrong thing ?
Could it be you been waitin' for the same ?
Can you see that this could be the right thing ?
Or is it me just dreamin' on again ?

I believe no one has the answers
But I believe the question's in your soul
Ah, don't cha know ?

Can you see that this could be the right thing ?
Or is it me just dreamin' on again ?
Could it be you been waitin' for the wrong thing ?
An' could it be I've been waitin' for the same ?
Ah, who's to blame ?

I believe no one has the answers
But I believe the question's in your soul
Ah, don't cha know ?

Comin' on Back ( Track 6 )

Jus' wanna say
Jus' wanna say " Hey "

I like to keep it clean, lean, an' mean
Said, I'll be your one-man lovin' machine
I know you've heard it all before
But, Babe, you keep me Comin' on Back for more, ya

Chorus :

You got me Comin' on Back for more
Said, Babe, you got me Comin' on Back
You got me Comin' on
You got me...Comin'

You've got the long, soft hair
You've got the leg right up to there
An' why you have to talk so sweet ?
How can you be such a physical treat ?
You have the eyes so true
You've got me Comin' on Back to you, ya

Chorus

Said, C'mon on Back...you've got me...for more...and more...and...

If one day you should leave
I'd feel a pain like you wouldn't believe
When ev'ry hour seem like a year,
A-losin' you, my greatest fear
An' why you have to talk so sweet ?
How can you be such a physical treat ?
Na, nah, nah, now, You have the eyes so true
You've got me Comin' on Back to you, ya

Chorus

Sep'rate Ways ( Track 7 )

Babe, What you say today
When you talk about goin' our Sep'rate Ways ?
Hey, What you do to me
When you talk about nothin' but bein' free ?
Whoa, Don't you know it's true
When I say there ain't been nobody but you ?
And, Ooh, What do I do tonight
When there ain't nobody to hold me tight ?

F ' n ' Fame ( Track 8 )

I wanna be a household name
I wanna be the " F " in " Fame "
I wanna fly my own jet plane

I wanna be a big time star
I wanna drive a fancy car
Let me just tell you just who you are

Want a-thousand girlie-bobs on my lap
Want ten lawyers to beat the rap
You can keep your damned cocaine
I just want the most famous brain

Gimme your money, gimme your love
Tell me I'm the sun/Son sent from above
Tell me the truth, tell me more lies,
Tell me I'm the greatest thing through your eyes

I wanna be a household name
I wanna be the " F " in " Fame "
You'll only have yourself to blame

I wanna be a household name
I might never treat you quite the same
Help me play my selfish game

I wanna be a household name
I wanna be the " F " in " Fame "
I wanna drink the best champagne

What I Want ( and what I get ) ( Track 9 )

Chorus :

What I want
an' what I get
Ain't been the same yet
What I need
an' what I see
Ain't what it should be, no

I been pullin' for the right thing
But end up pushin' on the wrong
I been lookin' for a sure thing
But the sure thing sure don't come along

Chorus

Ain't what it could be, well
Ain't gonna set me free, no

Break :

What I want, what I want, what I
What I see, what I see, what I
What I get, what I get, what I
What I need, what I need, what I

Chorus

What I need and, baby,
what I get
Just ain't been the sa-a-a-ame yet

Pomerado Road ( Track 10 )

Chorus :

You take the Pomerado Road
and you roll it on down to me
You take that long, lonely road
an' you roll it on down an' see

It's then that you realize
You're not who you really
thought you could be

Jumpin' on the backbone
Wantin' so much more
Talkin' ' bout the funnybone
Then seekin' out the door

Chorus

...should, would be, babe,
gonna take it on home,
real slow, yeah

Jumpin', Slippin', Sliddin', Oooh, yeah

Motoman ( Track 11 )

Motoman, mowin' down the road
Talkin' ' bout the two-wheeled story he told
I said now,
Motoman, livin' from a pack
Ain't got time for anybody hangin' on his back
I said now,
Motoman, lookin' for a thrill
Flyin' with the twin-V up that hill
I said now,
Motoman, mowin' down the road
Talkin' ' bout the two-wheeled story he told
I said now,
Motoman, mowin' down the road
Motoman, mowin' down the road
Motoman, mowin' down the road
Motoman, mowin' down the road

Motoman, Motoman, Motoman, Motoman

Tall, Light, & Ugly ( Track 12 )

Hey, baby, don't cho know, don't cho know
there's no one who can love you
like I do?

Don't cho know? Don't cho know?

Hey, baby, I ain't crazy no more
Tall, light, and ugly and it's knockin' at your door
Hey, darlin', tell me what cho gonna do?
Don't cho know how hard it was for me to get to you?
Hey, baby, I'd still be your lovin' fool

Chorus :

Could o', should o', would o', baby,
I'm the one who put it to ya
Just like ya told me to

Mornin', noon, and night
I always try to treat cha right
Oh, what else could a poor boy do?

Hey, baby, I said, who could ask for more?
So sweet an' lovely, you could make the rich feel poor
Hey, darling, tell me what cho gonna say?
Don't you know how hard it was for me to go away?
Hey, baby, I'd still be your lovin' fool

Chorus

Hey, baby, I ain't crazy no more
Tall, light, and ugly and it's waitin' by your door
Hey, darlin', tell me what cho gonna do?
Don't cho know how hard it was for me to get to you?
I said, don't cho know how hard it was for me to get to you?
Tell me, don't cho know how hard it was?

Don't cho know? Don't cho know?

I Can't Kill My TV ( Track 13 )

" Hey, Spud, Spud, where's the remote, man?
No, the remote...You had it last, man, I saw you...
Spud, where's the remote? Where's the remote, Spud?
Where's the remote ! "

I can't kill my TV
It's become a part of me
Ain't there anybody who can set me free

Break :

Baby, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Oh, baby, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

I'm an infomercial with nothin' ta sell
I'm a heaven-sent product goin' straight ta hell
Jeah, my friends try an' tell me, said, it's just as well
I'm a superficial man in an unreal world

Break

I'm a telethon junkie for a losin' cause
Just another dancin' chicken flashin' " Please Applause "
I just can't seem ta let it be

I can't kill my TV
It's become a part of me
Ain't there anybody who can,
Ain't there anybody who can,
Ain't there anybody who can set me free

Dyin' on Saturday ( Track 14 )

Got myself a calendar the other day
Found it in a little shop along the way
Wrote down three things I need to do
An' I'm on my way

Tusesday, food shoppin', gonna buy me some fruit
Thursday, downtown, gonna get me a suit

An' I'm dyin' on Saturday...Dyin' on Saturday
Nothin' more I got ta say,
I'm dyin' on Saturday, an' I'm on my way,
'cause I just can't stay,
I'm dyin' on Saturday...Dyin' on Saturday
Dyin' on Saturday...Nothin' more I've got ta say,
Dyin' on Saturday...

I can't see you anymore ( Track 15 )

I don't know what to do
I don't know what to say
I don't know where to go
to hide my heart away

An' I can't see you anymore
Could it be the last time
or the time before?
No, I can't see you anymore
Could it be the first last time
that I know for sure?

You say you don't know what to do
You say you don't know what to say
But you found out where to go
to hide your heart away

You can't see me anymore
Could it be the last time
or the time before?
You can't see me anymore
Could it be the first last time
that you know for sure?

What more can we do?
What more can we say?
An' where should we go
to find yesterday's love today?

An' I can't see you anymore
Could it be the last time
or the time before?
Oh, I can't see you anymore
Could it be the first last time
that I know for sure?
I just can't see you anymore
Could it be the last time
of a time before?

No Nonce Sense ( Track 16 )

There was a full moon this mornin'
And the sun was shinin' all last night
This is the way I been feelin'
not so right

I went for a stroll up the "top"walk
An' ev'ryone was runnin' by
I said stop and let's talk
before you pass away an'...
I don't know where they're goin'
but they're on their way
What more can I say?
I hope they're in today

Green is the grass I been seein'
But it grows in my living room
Blue is the sky I'll be feelin'
all too soon

There was a square in the round one
But there is a triangle in my mind
What was the one in the masses
who we left behind
What more can I say?
I hope He's in today

Razed on Rock 'n' Roll ( Track 17 )

We got funk
We got soul
We got blues
so I'm told
We got everything from jive to swing
and one thing inbetween

1st Chorus :

We were raised on Rock 'n' Roll
Gettin' blazed to soothe our souls
Purple Haze took it's toll
Razed on Rock 'n' Roll

You can dance
You can sing
You can prance
You can dream, dream
We got everything to groove the scene, yeah,
with one thing inbetween

2nd Chorus :

We were raised on Rock 'n' Roll
Gettin' blazed to soothe our souls
Crazy crazed to smoke our bowls
Razed on Rock 'n' Roll

Feel the drums
Feel the bass
Feel the lead
in your face
We got everything and inbetween
to make you jump and scream

1st & 2nd Chorus...et cetera...

Rock and stroll ( Songologies )

small WHALE and SMALL whale - Tracks ( 1 ) and ( 2 )

These are instrumentals of one progression on two tracks including three versions with four levels of increasing intensity = 5 x 5, hopefully : ) Technically, the second part of Track ( 2 ) is called SMALL WHALE but I just kept them linked together somewhat.
I think the most interesting aspect of this tune is the fact that even the leads on the first and second parts of Track ( 2 ) were recorded with the same acoustic guitar I used for all of my songs - Amazing what distortion and reverb can accomplish !!
These were the best leads I could come up with at 3 or 4 in the morning; it was one o' those long, tenacious struggles and I was fairly content, once I'd heard the part that sounds like the guitar is laughing ( just a little after 60 seconds in on Track ( 2 ).
Hope it ROCKS you at least a little bit : )

Rock ' n ' Roll forgot - Track ( 3 )

Originally, this was recorded in a professional studio, but since, at the time, I hadn't written any accompanying music for it, I just sang it a cappella ( single vocal only - no instruments ). I came up with the basic guitar progression just days before recording this current version and then layered the vocals in an attempt to compensate for the resultant imperfections.
One of my favorite parts comes after the second chorus, as it goes into the first break : Initially, it sounds as if things are gonna speed up, but hen it slides back down to its regular slower tempo.
Usually, with my attempts to play lead guitar, I simply improvise and keep things raw and instinctual ( that's why I'm an amateur ) ; however, on this particular song, I played over the second break a number of times, picked out the notes and intervals that caught my ear, and then pieced them together into the finished product.
More recently, I imagined Bob Seger, Paul Rodgers, or the incredible Chris Cornell singin' this one...I'm pretty sure, THAT would make it one of favorite songs of all time : )

Can you feel the mem'ries ( creepin' up on you ) ? - Track ( 4 )

Years ago, I was watchin' some funky movie on TV called " Hail Caesar " starring Anthony Michael Hall. At the very end, he performed a song he'd written called " Love Is ". Please don't misunderstand me, I like the song, but to me, it seemed almost as if it had been written practically using only two chords. So, I decided to challenge myself and see if I could write a half-way decent tune using only two chords...This was the result.

Could Be - Track ( 5 )

Way back when, a group of us traveled to Las Vegas, including my Uncle. We both had brought guitars along and he'd also packed a small, portable 4-track tape recorder. I played guitar and sang " Could Be " and then, after playing lead a couple of times over that playback, laid down the existing lead on the first take : )
My Uncle mailed me a cassette tape of the finished product which I eventually transferred to a computer file and then to a home studio recording computer program and, finally, to a CD. This is why the quality of the recording is so degraded, but as far as my " lead-playing abilities " go, I feel like this is about as close to " catching lightning in a bottle " as I'm able to get, so I kept it " as is ".
I think that if you're a discerning and tolerant enough listener, you may still be able to enjoy it...or, at least, I hope so...

Comin' on Back - ( 6 )

This is what I might refer to as " A Hot Mess "
As you listen to the first couple of minutes or so, you get the feeling that " somethin's just not right ", but ( unless you're an avid musician ) you just can't seem to put your finger on it ; I could have cleaned it up, perfected the timing, and prominently showcased the vocals, but instead, I purposefully left it in its convoluted / organic kind of state ( For instance, even retaining the over-played lead at @ 1:18 [ 78 seconds ] in ).
I realize it's, most likely, just a manipulation of my own justifications, but, to me, it's a musical synopsis of the rituals before, during, and after, the proverbial " One Night Stand " - that ( sometimes ) clumsy awkwardness in the beginning, getting to know one another, and then, somehow, in someway, things start to come together...

Sep ' rate Ways - Track ( 7 )

Exercises in repetition
Exercises in repetition
Exercises in repetition
Exercises in...

F ' n ' Fame - Track ( 8 )

A cynical look at some of the arrogant and superficial sides of what I imagine Fame would be like.
Because of the background percussions, I think the louder this could be played, the better !
( I've cut out the middleman : Every morning I wake up, I give myself my own autograph : o

What I Want ( and what I get ) - Track ( 9 )

Theme song for too many people, I'm afraid ; although, ironically, this song turned out much better than the first time I recorded it !

Pomerado Road - Track ( 10 )

Another basic progression, but I don't care - It's fun.
The lyrics seemed to have developed quite naturally and I'm happy with the way it builds and breaks up.
One of the things I don't like about it is that it ends too soon ! ( Man, that's, like, conceited or somethin' ! Oh, well... )

Motoman - Track ( 11 )

It probably should be " V-Twin " instead of " Twin-V ", but " Twin-V " seemed to fit better, lyrically.
I believe if you were interested in finding a small, eclectic group of individuals for some reason, you should look for the people who Really like this song.

Tall, Light, & Ugly - Track ( 12 )

Talk about " Too Close To Home " !!!

I Can't Kill My TV - Track ( 13 )

So - " Spud " - You get it ? " Spud ", slang for potato ..." Couch Potato " ( ! ) ... Well, they can't ALL be golden ( russets ) ... see what I mean ?
This menagerie should be played as loud as possible ( if you can stand the " in your face " vocals ) ; it's the best way to experience the progressing aural onslaught ( ! )
The breaking glass at the very end is supposed to represent a television screen ; I gave it a good shot, but couldn't quite get it to sound just the way I wanted it to...probably should of bought one at a thrift store or somethin'...
P. S. My TV is still very much alive and well and still very much killing me !

Dyin' on Saturday - Track ( 14 )

The most important thing you should know about this particular song ( at least in my little mind ) is that it's " Gonna buy me some FRUIT ", NOT " food ". The reason I point it out is that ( ignoring the self-indulgence and triviality ) " fruit " is a much more precise, semantic representation of Life and Death...plus it rhymes with " suit " : )
This song can easily serve as an all-encompassing springboard for the philosophical nature of everything...or not...
Anyway, see ya next Saturday...ah, better make that Friday...

I can't see you anymore - Track ( 15 )

TMI : Like many of the songs I've put online, this song was first recorded in a professional studio with just me and an acoustic guitar. I later added all of the embellishments ( e.g. Chimes, Chimes, and more Chimes ) using a home studio recording computer program.
One night, long ago now, I was at a bar and happened to run into the owner of the studio I'd recorded some of these songs at. He was and, most likely, still is a pretty cool character ( as long as I dismiss the suffering from some of his business practices ). Anyways, he told me that a News Crew had been scheduled to come to his studio the next day to get footage for a piece about Local Music Studio businesses and that the band he'd scheduled to perform had " bailed-out " at the last minute. I couldn't believe it when he asked ME to fill in ( !! )
The next day, a cameraman and a newscaster named Judy Hsu from Channel 8 met the Owner, a Studio Engineer, and myself at the studio...
Even before I was an adult, I've absolutely Despised having my photograph taken ( to the exaggerated point of being neurotic ), but it was the strangest thing : As I was sitting on a stool in the middle of the recording room, playing guitar and singing " I can't see you anymore ", while the cameraman circled me, filming for the duration of the entire song, I was actually HAPPY about it !! : o Must of been Vanity or self-aggrandizement or somethin' ( ? ! )
Days later, I felt horrible when I was told that the interview with the Engineer had been cut short because the camera had ran out of battery power from filming me for so long ( ! ) But it turned out, it didn't matter anyway - the piece never aired and, besides, the Owner told me that I had missed Two notes anyhow ! ... So much for Stardom, huh ? ... ha ...

No Nonce Sense - Track ( 16 )

This progression might be a little too simplistic for some, but I like to think that that's part of its charm.
I wrote this so long ago, I can't remember when. I do recall, however, that there was, originally, another entire set of verses at some point ...
It was an attempt to be a bit " Trippy ". I don't think it would fail too badly, as long as you listen to it on 4 / 20 ; )

Razed on Rock ' n ' Roll - Track ( 17 )

This is yet another " Hot Mess " of a song - Intentionally raspy, unsophisticated, coarse, and " Razed " ( almost like a " real " Rock and Roll song ! ) It's also aptly situated between " No Nonce Sense " and " Could Be ( Phunk ) ".
Hope it's tolerable enough to listen to.

Could Be ( Phunk ) - Track ( 18 )

This is the first song I've ever made using only a keyboard.
If you were kind enough ( or, perhaps, crazy enough ) to remember, it's a remake of " Could Be ", Track ( 5 )
The beginning isn't meant to be lazy or cruel - As you listen to that one sustained, synthesized note, you can not only hear a countless variety of real and imagined " other notes " and harmonies coming into play, but it forces your mind to wait for a resolution as well ( perhaps it is a cruel trick after all ). Also, later, it makes you wonder if it's going to happen again ! ( Even trickier ! )
If I could have re-created the same sound for this song that I have in my little noggin, then maybe I could have properly called it " Funk " instead of " Phunk ". Oh, well ...
I think this is a song that challenges the competent listener because it's so haphazard - not always having a consistent and predictable beat to follow ( if you don't count the loop I used at the end )
Anyway, I guess the main question might be " Is it listenable ? " ... Could Be : )
