ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Meditation Music is created for the purpose of relaxing the body, soothing the mind and facilitating a state of deep rest and peacefulness. The science of brainwave entrainment was used in composing the music to stimulate the brain to enter patterns of delta and theta waves found in states of deep meditation. Sonic technology such as binaural beats (track 4) and isochronic tones (tracks 1, 6) make use of modern research. Soothing sounds of nature are blended with slow moving melodies on acoustic instruments and synthesizers to achieve an illuminated state, whether it be for meditation, yoga, qigong, massage or spa relaxation.

Music For A New Age
The art of meditation goes back for thousands of years. So, what can the modern-day human do to alleviate stress, get centered and refocused on all the important things? Yes, some sort of discipline or meditation that has been proven to work successfully for many people, that is how.

Coming from my perspective, I have heard hundreds of recordings that can be considered and or used for meditation. When one looks at the most recent release from Joss Jaffe, titled quite simple and direct, Meditation Music, that covers an expansive area.

Soothing sounds of nature like waves or birds tweeting are commonalities in this type of musical mixture. There is something about connecting with mother nature that grounds us all, its automatic, and it happens quickly and makes you feel good. I think most folks would agree with that assessment.
What makes the seven tracks on Meditation Music different and special? What sets it apart from all the others available? What I read on the back of the CD cover was telling. The use of proven scientific methods, music and sound waves, can be a very unique and effective combination. Joss proves that to be true on the seven tracks on this CD. The intent is to enhance your life and tap into your spirit to relax the physical states of delta and theta that can be reached by stimulating the brain with sound waves. The technology such as binaural beats (track 4 ”Deep Theta”) and isochronic tones (tracks 1 “Deep Delta and 6 “Aura Massage”) makes fine use of the modern research developed over the years.

I decided to choose “Temple Clouds” to add to my New Age Music Reviews Spotify Playlist. It is a perfect example of having enough time for this kind of exercise to take hold. It lasts for 10:20 minutes and it is very effective. This is coming from not as just the music listener or reviewer of the music, but as a potential student of this type of practice.

Where science meets music and nature and they all converge to formulate medicine for the mind and body is what Meditation Music accomplishes. There are no pills, miracle ointments, mental or physical exercises to excite the adrenalin glands, just pure sound with the right mix of nature, tones, and music. All of it becomes one as you enter the state of being that brings renewal and peace. Who in their right mind would not want that? Or those not in their right mind that need healing and recovery can use this as well. All of us have our moments of panic, distress, or clouded thinking, and at times need a helping hand to refocus.
We are led down different paths in life and have so many doors to open and close. You can trust me when I say that you need to open the door that Joss Jaffe presents with Meditation Music.

From MainlyPiano
"Meditation Music" is the fourth album by Joss Jaffe, a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, tabla player and record producer who has traveled the world performing at large-scale yoga events and transformational festivals. This is Jaffe’s first release on the Be Why Music label which has won the New Age Grammy Award twice in the last three years. Quoting the liner notes of the CD, “The music was created for the purpose of relaxing the body, soothing the mind and facilitating a state of deep rest and peacefulness. The science of brainwave entrainment was used in composing the music to stimulate the brain to enter patterns of delta and theta waves found in states of deep meditation. Sonic technology such as binaural beats… and isochronic tones… make use of modern research. Soothing sounds of nature are blended with slowly moving melodies on acoustic instruments and synthesizers to achieve an illuminated state, whether it be for meditation, yoga, qigong, massage or spa relaxation.” I am no scientist and practice meditation on a fairly casual level, but there is something about this music that is incredibly calming. It is mostly ambient with no distinct or obvious rhythms or melodies, but it is more than pleasant to listen to for its own sake or as peaceful background music in addition to the intended purposes. As I understand it, binaural beats require headphones to be the most effective, but I have been listening to the album without them.

On some ambient and meditation recordings, the various tracks flow from one to the next fairly seamlessly, but the seven tracks on this album are distinctive while keeping a consistent tone of calm and relaxation. Jaffe explained to me in an email that the music is largely based in synthesizers and oscillator synths and that he carefully sculpted the sounds to create unique tones. A few of the songs are experimental and use unique sounds and pulses to create brainwave entrainment. “It was really fun to make and is a new direction for me.”

"Meditation Music" begins with “Deep Delta.” The sound of flowing water weaves in and out of the gently pulsing music - very peaceful and soothing. “Dream State” includes acoustic guitar moving slowly and gracefully through layers of undulating tonal colors that are almost magical. “Temple Clouds” is by far the longest track on the album at about 10 1/2 minutes. It is easy to imagine floating effortlessly on a cloud while the sun warms your face and body, soothing away all care and pain - very dreamy. “Deep Theta” is darker and more mysterious, but in no way suggests danger or unease - it is still very peaceful with a color palette of deeper hues. “Morning Sun Drops” floats on a quiet breeze, blissful and completely at ease. “Aura Massage” has an interesting pulsing sound throughout that is gentle and varied enough to not become tiresome. A quiet melody floats in the background - a fascinating contrast to the rhythmic pulsing! “Zen Forest” is very expansive and welcoming with warm, tranquil tones that move slowly while suggesting a variety of shapes moving through space.

Wow! Listening to this album closely is like taking a very relaxing and refreshing nap! This one will stay on my desk for times when I need a break! The whole world could use a big dose of what Joss Jaffe’s music has to offer!

Dyan Garris

Album Review by Dyan Garris
“Meditation Music” is deeply peaceful to the psyche on every level. Very effective for healing and coming back into alignment. ~ Dyan Garris

Joss Jaffe is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer, with a passion for creating music that relaxes the body, soothes the mind, and facilitates a deep state of peace.

Joss has traveled the world performing at large scale yoga events and transformational festivals including Bhaktifest, Wanderlust, Beloved, Lightning in a Bottle, Lucidity, Yoga Journal Conference, Korea Yoga Conference, Thailand Yoga and Dance Festival as well as many others. His new album “Meditation Music” is released by “Be Why Music,” a Los Angeles based New Age record label that has won the New Age Grammy® 2 times in the last 3 years.

Taking a scientific approach to the creation of “Meditation Music,” implementing binaural beats, isochronic tones (a pulsing tone that is turned on and off rapidly), and blending the slowly moving melodies of each track with the sounds of nature, along with acoustic instruments and synthesizers, I would say that he has succeeded in creating what he set out to create. “Meditation Music” is deeply peaceful to the psyche on every level.

The album is 7 tracks of tranquil serenity, just perfect for meditation, beginning with the almost 6 minute “Deep Delta.” I have listened to and created myself a lot of meditation music, and, personally, I sometimes find binaural beats and isochronic tones to be over-stimulating. This is just the right amount of isochronic tones in this track, at the right pulse and frequency, so as not to be overwhelming, but quite relaxing, which obviously is the goal.

Following is “Dream State,” which is exactly that; dreamy. Not meandering or particularly “spacey,” this takes you exactly where you want to be in meditation: Deeply relaxed, at peace, feeling one with “All That Is.” Very nicely done. The 10 minute “Temple Clouds” is expansive, and we can feel ourselves meditating - floating, yet also deeply grounded and connected - in an open temple, perhaps observing fluffy white clouds passing by overhead.

“Deep Theta” takes us deeper and deeper into the meditative state with its binaural beats. This is where we want our brainwaves to be for effective meditation. Again, not overdone. Just the right amount.

“Morning Sun Drops” feels like a delicate awakening. “Aura Massage” is a pulsating caress with its isochronic tones. The album closes out with the soothing, 8 minute “Zen Forest.” This feels like our heart chakra is gently and effortlessly opening. And. . .we are back at the ranch, ready to face the day.

It's worth noting that 2 of the tracks, “Deep Delta” and “Deep Theta” are tuned to 432hz. Music based on 432Hz is thought to transmit beneficial healing energy, because it is a pure tone of mathematics, fundamental to nature; essentially corresponding to the musical pitch of the universe. And that is exactly the point. Beautifully done.
